cleaning copper

Hi Guys, I've got some ancient brass fittings for WW1 models. They were acid etched years ago, and have become really stained and dirty. Is there some magic way of cleaning them, and restoring them to their former glory?

I use good old Coke Cola! (Not tried any of the reduced sugar varieties though! ) . On some fittings I've cleaned them very quickly (having soaked them for a few mins in said solution) as oxidization takes place as soon as it hits the air and put on a coat of clear lacquer .

Try Citric acid, obtainable from any home brew counter or chemist used for allsorts of things. Make into a fairly strong solution with water drop your parts in (those to be cleaned of course) job done. Make sure you wash them with hot water when finished, that applies to all the cleaning agents mentioned above as well.

It was a lunchtime trick of mine to completely detarnish a 2p using brown sauce.

Ketchup also works, but not quite as quickly.

Surprisingly I didnt put anyone off brown sauce, so my plan failed miserably.

I expect citric acid is the comon denominator in most of the suggestions
