David Ovenden
What can I use over Humbrol enamel paint that is really Fuelproof (against 15% Nitro fuel) and won't attack the paint? Also where can I buy 4mm thick sheet Dural /H15/ AU4G grade aluminium for a U/C? Need a piece 700 x 80mm!!
cymaz
Solarlac Clearcoat might be worth looking at. Ebay, Noggin Metals, Mallard Metals?
Engine Doctor
Solarlac Clear coat WILL pickle humbrol enamel gloss and may also lift humbrol matt.If its Enamel then you can only safely use another enamel or possibly an epoxy clear.Flair spectrum clear is quite good but needs a proper coat ,not just a dust coat and then needs at least a week or two to cure. Lee Smalley
Klasskote will do it, a light sprayed coat first to seal the paint (if anything is going to make the paint pickle it will be the thinners) once the light coat has dried then heavier wet coats can be applied, my roundles and my insignia on my spit were sprayed with enamels
Robin Etherton
Rustins two part floor coating is about as near as you can get to Tufcote or Furniglas hardset which are no longer available. Thin with thinners and apply light coats. Dries too quick for the thinners to affect the enamel. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
stuey
I have made up a test piece of oracover painted with Hobby Flight enamel. I left it for a few days then gave it a coat of Aerokote matt wiped on with a bit of sponge (saves cleaning a brush!) It has gone on fine with no reaction, it seems to flex ok as its got to go over parts of an unsheeted wing. Hopefully when I put a drop of Contest 10 on it nothing will happen! Paul Jefferies
I have recently discovered a single pack polyurethane in a rattle can. So far I have only tried it over cellulose and acrylic but so far so good. It is definitely proof against diesel fuel and I have no reason to think it would not be proof against glo fuel. As it is in a spray can it is obviously very easy to apply though it is a bit prone to runs so two thin coats are better than trying to do it in one go..... but it does give a very good finish. Made by Rust-Oleum, it is sold as a protective finish for furniture and it says "Polyurethane Finish" on the can. I got it in B&Q, I can't remember the exact price but it was somewhere around £7 - £8. Peter Miller
J. Perkins do a Fuel proofer which is polyurethane. Very like Ronseal. Works with 10% nitro.
Jon H
I use mr epoxy clear from mick reeves thinned with cellulose....now that should make it do all sorts of awful things for for reasons I do not understand it just works. the only think I can think is that the celly thinners evaporates before it can do any damage the stuff is a right pain to mix up and use but works really well. but for the love of all that's good and holy make sure you have a decent spray mask or you will have epoxy coated lungs in no time
David Ovenden
Thanks for all the ideas. In the end I decided to start again. I've removed all the enamel paint from the cowl in question and have repainted with car spray paint and then used Aerokote 2-part fuel proofer for a all-round tough finish.
