New Laser engines. What do you want?

As I was between the ages of 0 and 5 during the 80's I cant comment directly but from what I understand Neil and Ray Slack made the engines together using 5 150 cylinders and another with 5 180 cylinders. They ran very slowly which is why they sounded so nice.

I will soon be doing an experiment regarding and new bore/stroke ratio with future multi cylinder designs in mind. Each cylinder would be in the order of 20cc so some very simple mathematics is needsed to work out the capacity of a 3 cylinder engine. The only snag is that it might be larger in diameter than its competitors due to the long stroke, but I am working on that too.

I have also had a few parts made for another experimental idea that to the best of my knowledge has never been successfully done before either in modelling or in full size aircraft. Time will tell if I can get it right. If I can it should have high power/weight and power/size ratio's. Cant give details as yet, but if I get a running prototype up to speed I will fill you in.

Hi Rich

I hear what you are saying about prices and my master plan is to sell things at sensible prices that people can actually afford. Its all well and good having the worlds most wonderful engine but if you price it out of reach no one will buy it and you wont make any money.

Clearly we wont be pricing to match the Chinese products that are available, but we will be competitive against our Japanese and European competition.

Thanks, I'll have a look at a V twin...on youtube before being temped!

Regarding the diameter, Jon, that bothers the scale guys I am sure but I can never bring myself to cowl my lasers. I love to see them in the air in all their glory so even if the model has a cowl, i leave it off. Looks awful, but looks good...if you know what I mean.

Re: the Union Jack....recently I was discussing a new packaging system for a product we make at work with the packaging supplier. Currently the box states "Made in U.K." & the packaging supplier asked if we wanted to change it to "Made in E.U." "Why would we do that I?" asked...."It IS made in the UK." "Oh" he replied "It's just that Made in the UK puts some people off buying it...."

He wasn't joking.....smile o

I really like Laser engines, those that I've come across in other peoples' models have been fabulous. To be honest, they're beyond my budget for the larger and more useful sizes as I can't really justify spending hundreds of pounds on any engine. One pays one's money etc.

Being a somewhat specialist product for a relatively small market (and in a rapidly shrinking glow IC market anyway) is Laser batting on a sticky wicket, at least in the medium to long term?

I'm playing devil's advocate here and I'd be interested in hearing the comments of others. Far too many British companies (think radio control manufacturers as one glaring example - but not unique to the UK) have eventually fallen by the wayside after a gallant fight against foreign competition with price and increasing quality on their side.

Certainly, the Made in England label should be proudly displayed on the company's products and it's a credit to the owners that they haven't gone down the Dyson route by waving the Union Flag and transferring manufacturing to the Far East.

BTW mention was made of Bentley Cars.......................aren't they made by that fine, honest and reliable company VW?

I look away for one minute and look what happens!

Ok, the union flag thing....we have been considering using it somewhere/somehow but the snag is how to do so without it looking tacky. How many dreadful products have we seen with flags plastered all over the place? It sure as sausages didnt do Rover cars any good! We do want to make it known that the engines are made in the UK but putting flags all over the show might not be the best solution. I have not forgotten about this, its just not very high on my priority list.

Cuban, we have never been more competitively priced vs OS and Saito and with the long life of the engines you will see value for money. That said i do understand that 300 quid is a fair chunk of money for most people so does need to be carefully considered.

As for the shrinkage of the glow engine market we agree. Small models are now electric and big ones petrol. The bracket for glow engines engines has shrunk somewhat and that is part of the reason for this thread. We need to make the products people want.

We are going off topic here, I would not personally care what the sticker looked like, or even no sticker, and I ain't buying a hat. But marketing is lacking. I am the only Laser user in my (French) club. The members are intrigued, like a Twitcher on seeing a rare foreign visitor. They also note easy starts, reliable idle, power to pull. Plenty of OS and Saito users. Some business cards in every moter leaving the factory? And a plain sticker with a web site address? At the end of the day there is no aero modelling reason why Laser should be rarer than the premium Japanese motors, therefore the reason has to be marketing of the product.. And the website is not great.

Hi Guys

Your comments about logo's and so on are helpful, but at the end of the day it falls to me to actually do it and graphic design is not really something i excel at or (at the moment anyway) have time for. There are loads of updates i need to put on the website but it takes forever to put them together in photoshop and for some reason the website has decided it dosent want to upload photos into our gallery without screwing up the quality. I will eventually fix it but with only one of me to do everything its not going to happen soon.

Donald, are you on the correct website? the old .co.uk site is out of date and really does not work, the new laserengines.com site is far superior. If it is the .com site you dislike what exactly do you think needs changing?

Jon my 2 bob's worth ...... I have not had the pleasure of owning Laser, but where as large models require deep pockets which I don't have,....to get your engines a greater niche of the engine sales, reducing the size and this would bring down he cost.... more motors mean more people involved....petrol powered 10cc and 15cc, should be a grand starting point,

Trimming down the crankcase to reduce weight and achieve a better look, would also help

As I said my 2 bob's worth
