Kit valuation

Advert

Some model kits are advertised at prices more than their original purchase price and some are almost given away.

It depends entirely on how much you want for them. You might better off listing them here first, if you have a price you would be happy with in mind.

I've had a trawl through ebay looking at current and completed listings, as well as a couple of US sites. No-one seem to have sold either as unstarted kit. Oddly, it seems the unstarted versions are often worth more than completed.

No rhyme or reason, really. Looks as if it's Ebay, or stick 'em in the workshop for next winter.

Another thread last week said this about a DB Piper Cub " the kit I had was manufactured around 2001 and bought at a swapmeet last week. A great buy at £80."

Of course the balsa might have deteriorated and older kits were possibly not as nice as the latest laser cut items but that gives an opinion of the value.

This one has pre-cut components, each individually numbered, and comes with what looks like typewritten instructions that have been photocopied (along with a two piece plan). The box is quite plane, not fancily illustrated. The instructions have an address: D B Model, 3 East St, Irchester. Not been right through it, but the wood seems to be in excellent nick. The pre-cut glazing sections are wrapped in a sheet of brown paper!

It's the quality of the cutting that modern laser cutting gives which people prefer, so an older kit will be less attractive. The Irchester address suggests it may be one of the previous owners - David Boddington, or Derek Cox, then it was owned by Eddie Stocker now Richard Bristow. All highly regarded but technology has improved with the advent of laser cutting probably introduced during Eddie Stockers ownership a few years back.

The current version is produced in Wales and the website here gives current price.

Obviously a complete untouched kit is worth more than one that looks as though it has been unpacked and repacked!
