Tim Campling
Hi all, I've finally succumbed and bought my first petrol ic, a DLE 60 twin. Bought from a mate but unused originally from Steve Webbs. It's all plumbed in and live but I can't start it. The issue seems to be no fuel into the carb. If I blow down the feed pipe its like blowing against a bung regardless of throttle/choke position. I've checked the low and high speed needles are at factory. A small squirt of fuel into the pot creates a pop so I know there's a spark. I feel the carb is just not sucking fuel in but am I missing something, what am I doing wrong? Tim Campling
Thanks Tom, is that easy enough, I presume there is a rebuild kit available. Is this sort of problem common and if so what's the prevention?
bert baker
Always make sure you have a spark plug fully in the cap, the spark units can easily go wrong if the unit tries to spark with out a spark plug fitted,, There is loads of Walbro carb videos on net worth watching
cymaz
Do you have a tank pipe open to atmosphere?
Engine Doctor
Put your finger over the carb and turn over. It should draw fuel into the carb. Once the carb it wetted then try starting. The diaphragm may have ton e hard but if its never been run then that's unlikely.!
ChrisB
Take the diaphragm out a soak in petrol for a day or two, that may solve the problem
Gordon Whitehead 1
The reason that you can't blow down the feed pipe is that the regulator only allows fuel to flow when the engine sucks. So that is not a fault. Also, the Walbro pump is powerful enough that even if the tank vent is blocked, it will suck fuel and collapse the tank inwards somewhat before it gives up. The carbs are easy to dismantle and fix. Ebay has plenty of Walbro repair kits. These are usually illustrated showing the contents, so if the diaphragm needs replacing, just buy a kit with the same shape diaphragm as the one in your carb. Ultymate
If the engines new and not been run it's far more likely to be a stuck needle than a diaphragm fault. Before doing anything else I'd prime the carb by shooting some fuel down the venturi of the carb, assuming you have ignition this should usually cause the engine to fire which as a rule will shock the needle loose without the need to strip the carb down
Tim Campling
Thanks for all the input guys. I did think about soaking in fuel, I'll check all the above and try squirting a bit of fuel up the chute.
onetenor
Diaphragms can go soft / floppy and not draw fuel. Soak it not in petrol but in meths or Methanol for a while. Reassemble and test . .If still no joy then change the diaphragm. This happens quite often on CD Stromberg carbs on cars etc. It's a weird effect. John Emms 1
If a new Walbro carb is not drawing fuel, then pump fuel into the carb pump inlet to get the pump working. HTH, John

Tim Campling
Cheers Cymaz. I can't get near it 'till the weekend but I've squirted a bit of fuel into the carb to 'wet' it.
