trebor
I'm just starting to put my Pheonix 2000 together but found my choice of motor has a 3mm shaft and the folding prop has a 4mm collet. Looking at the spare adaptors in the box there is a 3mm adaptor but the shape of the collet will not fit the nut shaped collet half in the prop. What can I do, replace the motor or the folding prop ? This is the motor I got **LINK**

trebor
I started thinking maybe the motor is a bit small if the glider prop needs a 4mm shaft ? I'll ask a question in the glider section
Geoff S
Obviously changing the prop is the obvious thing to do. However, I fitted a Gliderdrive motor to my Phoenix. They're more expensive and more powerful than actually needed but you can always prop appropriately to get the power you want and the motor will be working well within its limits. They also fit very neatly in the restricted nose with easily accessible rear connections. So if you can find a use for the motor you already have in another model it's worth thinking about a different one. Geoff
trebor
Just had a look, that motor has a 5mm shaft which would put me in the same position unless it has an adaptor to fit the prop at 4mm.
Pete B
I've deleted the other thread you've started on this subject, trebor - otherwise things might get complicated... Pete
onetenor
Drill out the prop?
trebor
I'd need a lathe to enlarge the collet that fits in the folding prop cone thingamajig.
Geoff S
Folding prop collets/hubs are widely available and IIRC the blades are interchangeable. I have 12x6 blades on mine but obviously the actual diameter can vary slightly depending on the hub. Can't remember the current draw on mine but I get bored before a 2200 mAH 3S LiPo is anything like exhausted. Geoff
onetenor
Trebor Have you got a drill press ? You could use that with a hand held drill or reamer. It wouldn't take much . Geoff hat is one sweet motor
trebor
Oh I've had a bad experience with drills snatching on alloy, I always make a simple job a nightmare Been looking on HK website, found folding props but not the collet adaptors I find it very frustrating since the website updated. Geoff S
This one on the HK site might suit a 5mm shaft. There are lots of blades but 12x8 would probably work OK Geoff
trebor
I can't see the motor spindle size listed for it ! Is my motor too small ? What's the route measurment ? Is it the base of the prop blade. I've measured my prop at 10" not sure what the pitch is and the base / route !! Measures 8mm with a 3mm screw through it. As you can tell this is my first powered glider with a folding prop so it's all a bit strange.

Mike Stevens
I recently drilled out a motor collett about 1mm in a drill press but you do need to go steady and used plenty of WD40 as a lubricant.
trebor
Thanks for the advise, I found this one which Ive ordered. If I need to change the motor later on I can with the spare adaptors it comes with. https://hobbyking.com/en_us/45mm-alloy-folding-prop-spinner-with-3-17-4mm-5mm-adapter.html Edited By trebor on 03/12/2017 17:05:
trebor
My lovely new spinner turned up but is it too big ? The other thing my motor spindle is only poking through 9mm, I am tempted to file out the centre so the spinner can move back but are those slots in the metal disk for cooling ? Also the screws are slightly different diameter giving the props sloppy movement, has anyone filled and re drilled the holes before ? Ron Gray
Do you mean the prop pivot bolts on the new spinner are smaller than the old ones? If that’s the case then can’t you drill and tap the new holders?
trebor
I could but maybe the spinner supplied with the glider was a cheap thing. Before I do that I will check to see what other props require for a bolt size. The alloy spinner has 2.2mm bolts why are they all odd sizes
john stones 1 - Moderator
You want the wizzy things up front balanced, so as you say buy the correct prop. same routine i went through when i changed motor on mine, patience is a virtue or so I've heard. onetenor
Spinner is great. Bolt size 8 ba is nearest I think. The pivot I can see in one appears to be a panel pin. These vary in diameter according to maker. Take you prop to a couple of DIY stores and see if you can find a thicker one or use piano wire to make new pivots.twisting the cut end through the hole for a.tight(close ) fit

HUB and BLADE ROOT with brass tubing and matching piano wire for the pivots. As Alexander says @@@@@@s. trebor
I've had a rummage round this afternoon and found some brass fuel tube which is a good fit
