cymaz
That’s a clever way of building a wing. Any more pictures of this?
Dan Workman
Unfortunately i damaged my phone with a load of pics on, especially the sheeting part. Before i did sheet it though, i couldnt resist getting a look with the wings on the fuz..
Phil 9
can you tell me where you got your wing tubes from

Gary Manuel
Wings look a bit short, but I'm sure they're not. How close to 2m are the wingspan and fuselage length? Edited By Gary Manuel on 15/02/2018 20:25:
Gary Manuel
Are ribs R4 doubled up at the trailing edge where you are going to separate the ailerons from the wings? Looks like it needs a triangular piece adding to the end of the aileron. Edit - No criticism intended. I'm fascinated by this design / build. Dan Workman
Hi Gary, the fuz is bang on 2m, you could even go 2.02m as you get a 1% measuring tolerance. The wings are never usually 2m, the norm is about 1750mm to 1800mm. Your right there is a wing tip to go on.I didnt double up the ribs, i just sanded the end of the aileron to take some 3/32" balsa and give a 1mm gap. I've finished 1 wing now, going to do the other tonight i'll take some pics.Dan
Nigel R
Looking good Dan. I like the cradle. I guess that is quite easy to do with CAD, drop a line a fixed distance from the rib centrelines and you're almost there with the female part? Dan Workman
Yes Nigel as simple as that. It makes the wings and tail very easy to build.I started the tail tonight and got some pics, also some pics of the wings. I'll try and get them up soon
Dan Workman
Few pics of finishing the wings, pretty pleased how they've come out. Nice and straight and light. Only snag is ones a bit heavier than the other, not quite sure how that happened but hey.. They're 225g and 245g ready to cover.
Dan Workman
Couple of pics of the tail.
Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator
Interesting that - one wing being nearly 10% heavier than the other??? Wood density? A bit generous with the glue? Just shows you. Lovely work all round though. BEB
Nigel R
"They're 225g and 245g ready to cover." That's very, very light for something carrying 900 or so square inches of area. Good work. The airframe must total around 3lb or 3.5lb when you get the fuselage and tailplane into the picture?
Martyn K
Are you going to statically balance the wings before covering Dan? You may find that the weight disparity may not require 20g in the tip. Model looks amazing - it's a real credit to you Martyn
Dan Workman
Thanks guys. Beb- i used contest grade 3/32 from balsacabin, i think they class anything under 21g as contest (for this size sheet) so you can get a 15g sheet or a 20g sheet. I was just pulling sheets of a pile so thats prob where the weight difference is.Nigel- yes they're very light, the fuz with wing tube, canopy and rudder will be about 1050g, tails about 75g each and the wings 465g. So about 1665g ish for bare airframe uncovered. Havent got my converter so what 3 3/4 lb?Martyn- i will laterally balance the whole thing when its finished, hopefully just moving the lipos sideways will sort it! They weigh about 1200gDan
Dan Workman
Started covering now, gone for orange and black, hopefully will be nice and visible. Bit different from the norm, most f3a planes seem to have a white base.
Gary Manuel
Looking lovely Dan. Hope the black diagonal area doesn't trick the (judges) eye into thinking it's flying nose up / tail down.
Geoff S
Beautiful job. I hope we'll see you flying it at Ashbourne sometime this year. The F3a flyers usually have a couple of competitions here. However (and this is no criticism of your superb work), I find F3a models very ugly despite their undoubted fine flying characteristics. But then, I like old biplanes which isn't everyone's cup of tea either Geoff
Dan Workman
Thanks guysGary, yes it did cross my mind, we'll just have to see how it presents in the air.Geoff, hopefully i'll be at Ashbourne sometime this year, did a comp there last year but my first time there was about 17ish years ago for an IMAC comp.Beauty is in the eye of the beholder But yes, i can see how people can find f3a models ugly! Dan Workman
Haha a blast from the past! I'm sure that plane is still going somewhere, i know nathan had it for years. That must have been early 2000's
