Steve Nash 1
Yes they are 1970s/80s pilots in 1/12 scale. Not exactly right scale but not too bad
Steve Jones 2
Mine are from real model pilots too.. but 1/16th scale... Real aircraft I thin is 11m wingspan which scales to Tony model of 28" at 1/16.. They look a bit small but filled the cockpit with seating etc.. Don't think scale really matters as long as there is someone in the 'office !!' Steve
David P Williams
Mr Nijhuis's build article in the mag suggested 1/15 scale. Sean at Realmodelpilots offered 1950's pilot busts with goggles in any scale so I ordered them in 1/15. They look about right I think. Steve Nash 1
Apologies, actually you are right, they were 1/15 pilots that I got, not 1/12. I couldn’t find the receipt to check. I know they are a tiny bit small but no ones going to measure them to check. I think they look fine and They look better than having an empty cockpit. Trevor Crook
Just ordered the Provost plastic parts, doing mine the hard way from wood stock and plan. I'm also contemplating the red CFS scheme Ray is using on the previous page, having seen the Airfix kits in Lidl.
Steve Nash 1
Hi Trevor, thats how I did mine. There aren't too many parts to cut out. It is a lot cheaper that way 😀
Steve Jones 2
So , despite the weather .. a grand day out and maiden of another Provost , great job Tim, and my Gnat. Both flew great with my Gnat a real pleasure. A bit twitchy on setup but that was my fault , once sailed in amazing .. fly better than my Provost and so smooth on half power. A real stunner Tony !! Steve Nash 1
Can't wait to build the Gnat too. I've just started cutting out the parts. I have the canopy and FMS fan ready. Just finishing the Provost, just fitting in receiver, connecting ailerons and sticking on intakes.
David P Williams
Hi all, still busy assembling my JP. How did you do the elevator linkage(s) - did you follow the plan? Seems a bit tight and fiddly to use wire and soldered on threaded adaptors with normal clevises. Did you do the 'Y' linkage to both elevators? Was thinking of modifying to link the elevators with a joiner and run a single snake/wire. What do you think?
Ray Wood 4
Hi David, yep I'm having the same thoughts regarding the piano wire push rods, but will give it a go, just glued the wings on 😀 regards Ray
Steve Jones 2
Hi there, On my Provost I chickened out and used 2 micro servos for the elevators which made the linkages simple - single slec small plastic snakes with metal quicklings super glued on one end - other plastic clevis super glued onto the plastic inner. The extra weigh.. grammes I really don't think makes a difference as the servos are so small, reduced load and make adjustment easier. I have done the same on the Gnat. Tim Ballinger
Dave, Can’t beat a bit of bling ! just cutting out the bits for my gnat. Sounds like we will eventually have more model gnats flying than the RAF ever had. Was worried about orientation problems with a single colour be red or yellow so decided on the gnat that went to RAE Bedford experimental flight which has large parts of blue underneath . I ordered my two pilots then realised the Bedford gnat was converted to a single seat! Keeping the two seats though so my will have to be from its transition phase ; must have had one I reckon. Dave Chatterton
Hi Tim sounds like you’ve got it all sorted. Did you read my post about fitting the wing in two halves as I found the easier. regards Dave
Dave Chatterton
Tim i fitted the anhedral brace to one wing half and then sanded the root of the othe half to account for the anhedral then slid the half with the brace attached into the fus and then added epoxy the the other half and slid into place. Hope that makes sense. Dave
Tim Ballinger
Thanks Dave, yes I saw your alternative . I have not joined my wing halves yet so will see which looks best when I get the fuselage together. I have been deliberately dragging my feet waiting for the fan to arrive from Banggood, which it did today. Looks really nice. I note the fan LE ring is not firmly attached to the fan duct. Is that normal? Looks like a drop of cyno is needed. Is that what others have done ? Tim
Ray Wood 4
Hi Tim, Yes that's what I did with Cyano, and used a hot glue gun for the first time to install the fan, go easy when put the second part of the bulkhead in as the fan shroud distorts easily Regards Ray
