Maurice Dyer
First time I've used BQ a valspar, matched to PC10 from humbrol.. Thinned it a little so it's like ordinary household gloss. Brushing it on a nylon/tissue covered SE5a. But, after 6 coats it's just about covering !. I was going to thin it enough to spray at first. I would be spraying it until next year at this rate. Anybody suggest an alternative paint (apart from Humbrol) or do I persevere or ??? Help Maurice
Denis Watkins
You know pigments Maurice, are fine ground powders for us modeller to brush paint and spray, and modern enamel and acrylics are excellent. I don't think Valspar aspire to our needs. Google PC10 in Britmodeller, as they have some alternate suggestions
Bob Cotsford
I think that household gloss paints don't contain much pigment and rely on having the correct colour undercoat. A water based vinyl silk emulsion type paint might give better cover as it doesn't need the clear varnish component that makes a gloss glossy. Piers Bowlan
Posted by Bob Cotsford on 26/11/2020 15:15:59: I think that household gloss paints don't contain much pigment and rely on having the correct colour undercoat. I agree, in many cases the correct undercoat is essential for household paints. Also, from my experience B & Q are chiefly consumer (DIY) paints not noted for having a lot of pigment. When it comes to decorating always try to buy trade (professional) paint as it covers better and should not spatter if using a roller. Although quality paint costs more per litre, you need less paint so it works much the same cost with added bonuses of less work and better finish. I have always used humbrol paints or film covering on models.
Geoff S
I love Valspar. First you can get a reasonable colour match; second it's water clean up/thin; third it both sprays and brushes well. Never tried PC10 (which varies anyway) but I've had some red to match some red Solartex on a Tiger Moth and some Corsair Blue for my Sopwith Pup. The colour match wasn't quite as close as I would have liked but OK at at Peter Miller's 50' All my builds are electric (so fuel proofing isn't an issue) and I've opted for silk rather than gloss. 2 or 3 coats are adequate - though if I'm using my single action Badger airbrush it's a lot of very light coats to avoid runs. It still doesn't take long because it dries quite quickly. Geoff
