Simon Burch 1
Surely the spooky skulls would frighten the air away from the bottom surface of the wing, create a partial vacuum, and draw the wing downwards.... Don Fry
Failing to take into account curiosity of airflow, the airflow at the top can’t see what’s happening, through the wing, and rushes to to see what is happening further back, and is rushing to find out, creating a low pressure area on the top surface. Simon Burch 1
Don - you are clearly a Bernoulli-ist and not a Newtonist!
J D 8
How does a helicopter fly? They vibrate so much the earth rejects them.😁 At least the ones I flew in did vibrate a lot. Sat in the back it was fascinating watching rivets rotating in their holes. Noted this to the winchman. Good old Sea King, 50,000 rivets in loose formation. Martin Harris - Moderator
I’d always heard that they simply beat the air into submission. I’ve often wondered why the principle of strapping a piece of buttered toast to a cat’s back hasn’t been widely adopted. As we all know, a dropped cat will always land on its feet and toast always lands butter side down so the result can only be that the combination will stay clear of the ground. Zflyer
The axial rolls performed by the cat as it attempted to lick the butter off the toast was a sight to behold!

Martin Harris - Moderator
I’m agnostic - I reckon there are elements of both involved.

Indeed - who knows? I remember a principles of flight instructor telling our class that 'aerodynamics is an art form - not a science'.
