When you make the 3d printed parts for the battery tray, how thick do you make it, and what density of infill do you use, I was thinking of about 25% infill, and maybe 1.5mm thick so as to not add too much weight, but would appreciate your input.

Thanks

Hi Steve

I made mine 3mm thick with 20% infill. On my new fuselage I've laser cut a tray from 1.8mm ply, it was quicker than 3D printing a new one and because I could, I made it run from F2 to F3 in one piece!

Well what a day, the sun shone the wind was next to non existence and we had tremendous fun. 12 Hankies were present on the day with another 8 either not able to make it or not quite finished. Better photos will be updated when they have been collected from the various photographers!

Not all Wacky Races rounds were carried out as members were flying other models plus, for many, this was the opportunity to maiden / fine tune. I did find that a lot were flying with a too reward COG which made the HP very twitchy but with it moved forwards they became much easier to fly. Anyway, here is the leader board as it currently stands and you can go to my club's website for more photos and news BMFC

Hi Steve

It was a right good larf. One of the rounds is now going to be changed, the ‘Stick it in’ was nearest to the mark based on first point of contact but after discussions I’ve decided to change that so it is from where the model finishes up. As a consequence this round is to be known as ‘Skid marks’.

We are mostly using 8x6 APC but one guy has got a folding jobby on his. It certainly (in some way a bit of a contradiction) helped in the Viagra Challenge as he kept it up for the longest, unfortunately, despite his obvious stamina, he was somewhat wide of the mark on his approach so was disqualified.

A big thanks to you  for answering my questions in regards to building this model. Your help was appreciated. It was my first go at foam models and although I’m ok with balsa, the material was unfamiliar and left me scratching my head a few times. I guess when I got stuck in I realised that the best way was to treat it like balsa wherever you can, and adopt knew techniques when you need them.
however it does produce a useable model, and mine will get a maiden when the weather gets a bit better.
my setup is

overlander 2830 1300kv

apc 8x6 electric

1300 3s

30 a esc.
However my wattmeter seems to say that I’m pulling about 260w, wot. Has your motor stood up to this in normal flying or should I downsize the prop to say an 8x4.
I’m looking forward to a change in the weather, when I’ll have a go at that competition called the skid mark

Thanks

Steve

That looks superb Steve, well done (I’ve rotated the image to save my straining my neck!)

Your approach to building it was spot on, building in Depron or foam board puts people off but it is really very simple!

The motor/prop/esc setup you’ve got is fine, all 12 Hankies flown last Sunday had the same configuration and no one experienced any issues with overheating etc, just be warned on WOT it is quick! Another thing to make sure of, elevator only needs a max of 8mm up and down, in fact I’ve dialled mine down to 5mm and make sure your COG is not behind the spar, in fact move the battery so that it is 10mm in front of the spar for your first flight. A lot of my guys commented on how twitchy it was but as soon as they moved the COG forwards it became a much easier beast to fly.

The Skid Marks round of the Wacky Races will be a lot easier if the grass is slightly wet!

I was hoping that other clubs would get involved and run their own Wacky Races with the Hankies (built to my specifications of course!) and then I could have a leader board for the whole country, well maybe next year (different model!).

The KFm-2 wing is built to create a step in the top surface of the wing with the step at 50% chord and an airfoil shape formed on the top, front piece:

image.png.7ae748fd47bf60f9d266ddeddc5e3e7d.png

Now with the swept back LE of the HP I decided that I would form the step just behind the spar on the foam wing as I wanted to enclose the wing servos but I suggested to others to form it on the spar line and that works fine. So to construct the wing I used a full wing sheet of 6mm Depron and then glued another piece on top of that finishing at the line the spar, then stuck the spar on.

This is the extra bit of Depron to bury the servos

Then stuck on the bottom sheet

Not my finest covering job but I didn't want to spend too long on it as I wanted to prove (to myself) that I could build and finish it in under an hour!

Things to note.

I didn't form a nice curved top airfoil shape to the front section as per pukka KFm-2.

Covering film to the top was done in 2 pieces, 1 piece from the TE to the step, 2nd piece from the LE down over the step.

Aileron hinge formed with Blenderm top and bottom.

Flight characteristics, seems to be more planted in normal flight, bank and yank turns are rock solid. Sinks a lot more on glide. Doesn't spin as well as traditional airfoil.

In short, it's a brilliant, quick to build option!

As an aside, @Kevin Fairgrieve is building another (balsa) Hanky and he is using the KFm-3 airfoil section which has 2 steps down on the top, so it will be interesting to see how that one goes.

And like @Ron Grayhas done I have modified the KFm-3 to partially hide the servo`s. I guess my steps are at about 50% and 60@ of chord. In retrospect I should have gone with 75% as it would have completely swallowed the servo`s and looked nicer.

We shall see.

Has the KFM3 maidened yet please, and if so, I'm intrigued to know how it performed?

I maidened it on the morning of the latest Wacky Races. It fly`s like my foam planky. Not a lot of difference to be honest.

I did however elect to use the Depron one for the races.
