Greenacres Electric Fun Fly Weekend Aug 22 & 23rd

Hi guys, well that was a crcking weekend, slightly marred by the blusterry winds on Sunday. Would you believe my face is burnt from all the sunshine! not a drop of rain all weekend and Saturday was really nice. I didn't manage much flying as is the norm at our club events there are just so many people to see and chat too. I did manage A really enjoyable test flight with the Triplane, and it flew straight as an arrow with neither elevator nor aileron trim required, the takeoff was interesting but very straightforward.

I also had a really nice flight with the Fury, I did probably my best ever warbird barrel roll, from a low pass from the left, onoly slightly marred by my embarrasment for not calling the manouvre and getting a sharp telling off from the flightline marshall.... Sorry Symon, I wont do it again......

I must say it was also great to see a few from the forums and we had a good chat. Thanks for making the trip guys it was fantastic to see you. Those that made it were FlyNavy (John) Tom Foreman (great flying in that wind on Sunday ) Tim Hooper managed to come along both days and fly, It really took me back seeing an RC converted Keil Kraft Ladybird. And last but not least Bob Cotsford who avoided the traffic by coming by bike...... If anybody else made it and I missed you I am sorry about that, you must come and poke me in the ribs and say hi

Anyway the Flair Yawn patrol didn't go very well with nobody bringing any along apart from my Baronette, and the Se5a, however the wind precluded flying them much. so I will save it for next year.  By then will have perfected the smoke system. Perhaps we will all have smoke and an umpire controlled smoking system can be fitted to all combatants, he who the umpire feels gets hit has to fire their "smoke" and and fake plummeting to there doom. Of course the weather will get in the way as it did this year but we can plan. Anybody game?

Once again a big thank you to all the Greenacres members for a great weekend and all the hard work and to all of you that came along, there were some excellent and talented demo flyers that attended,  without them flying when we were a bit worried by the blusterry winds, the show would have had some big gaps. Thanks guys you know who you were and so do we.

It was a great weekend, some fantastic loyal trade presence, a great burger van that did the best full english there is, and sunshine.

Cheers
Danny

Just like to second Danny's comments here!

Yesterday was a pefect occasion - there were loads of models and pilots, and the skies were kept busy all day.  So many superb models that it would be unfair to single any out for special mention.

Yes, today was windy, and so the numbers were down by a considerable margin.

I think the best bit, though, was just to share in the cameraderie that the Greenacres event evinces.  Just bumping into old friends and sharing the banter made trip worth while.  I even found an old (lapsed) clubmate, who went home with a nice new EDF F16 to herald his return to the fold.

The organisation was, as usual, first class, and the Greenacres club really has this down to a fine art now.  The officials were diligent and courteous to all.

So thanks for a super weekend lads!

Thanks for that Tim.

On behalf of the club I'd like to say that the cameraderie shown by visitors is the reason we do it. I add my thanks to all members who helped in any way. (And non members - who was that nice lady who sold all those raffle tickets for us? I'm still not convinced anyone knows!)

If you can measure how much I enjoyed my weekend  by how tired I am, then I had a fantastic time! (Which I certainly did).

And you are right, meeting and chatting with fellow enthusiasts does curtail your flying!)

Anyyway, heres a taster video, taken from my Twin converted YT 3Demon. If yr interested, Danny features personally, if you fast forward after the landing....

Sorry, this is uncut, but it's the quick way tonight.
Theres loads of great photos, but I have unpackingto do.
Cheers, Chris (Event Director - 'cos I couldn't think of an excuse quick enough!)

Thanks Tim it was a real pleasure to meet you, I like to think that the leccy fun fly we hold is a chance to socialise and to share technology that we are dablling in, share aspirations and general enjoy a beer and a BBQ together. Of course its great to have a fly together too, and as I am glad to hear you say you felt welcome into the group. The banter on the flight line was really great at times and it was fun to just be part of it. Of course I had to say you were in my good books the minute you said you liked my Fury flight

Yes David we have hundreds of photographs as we have at least one professional photographer in the club and a small army of really good amateurs. I am sure Chris will post some of his soon. some of Thomas the Triplane are really nice shot in the dawn sunshine, you will know what I mean when you see them. It is our club nigth on Wednesday and hopefully we will see and collate some of them for the web site.

Cheers

Fantastic footage Chris, and sooo many 3Demons, You might want to add that there were 4 of us with identical planes in that melee , apart from your mutant tweemon version that Wilson from YT was sooo interested in.

A bit of a shame that Gavin and I collided so dramatically later on when we all went up again, bits of film were strawn between Walsall and Ipswich. Great fun and at least Gavin and I got to share the best mishap trophy, seemed only fair as he has held it alone for the last three years on the trot. Funny how gavin is always involved

For those of you that have never come to Greenacres yes that flying field is enormous and all is mown short.

Come and see for yourselves next year?

Cheers, like Chris a very tired and sunburnt camper........

Well had a great weekend flying perfect weather on the Saturday and a bit blustery on the Sunday, but if you fly in the UK you get used to it

Big thankyou for all the GMAC marshals and organisers, it felt more like a show than a fly in, lots of the general public seemed to be amazed at the power of electric flight, hope we have attracted some more recruits for the electric cause

Fantastic field, smoothested grass I've ever flown off ,some of the high lights for me;

- The super fast hot liners / pylon racers screaming around at 200 - 300 mph
- The foam combat models, especially when they were flying at night over the camp site
- The large WW1 Biplane (Sopwith Pup?) even though it threw a prop, the smoke from the ESC was very realistic! Came down safely enough though.
- The yellow Demon display team with the mid-air crash
- Hanger 9 display guy (sorry didn't catch the name), very low circuits with a Sundowner on 8s1p
- Big P47 Thunderbolt, sounded very authentic with that big prop and airframe thundering around the sky doing giant aeros, flown very well as well.

Will post some photos later.

Cheers,

Tom

PS - See you their next year.

What happened with the Pup? I saw the hasty smoke-trailing landing, though it was simulating being shot down at first
As for those hotliners, at times the only way I could follow them was by the sound! Amazing things, but definitely for those with fast reactions and good eyes.
Some very nice scale models, and the young lad flying 3D would put most of us club flyers to shame.

Thanks Tom I am glad you enjoyed the weekend.

I am not sure we should publicise some of those as highlights LOL as some we tried to nip in the bud pretty quickly, especially the night flying. Not a problem in the middle of that huge field but over the campsite absolutely not!

Sid will be dissapointed that his burgers were not included in your highlights for the weekend.

Yes the big 1/3 BUSA Pup belongs to Tony from All Electric, they have supported this event for many years. He managed to fry an esc and it shorted the motor which stopped it dead, this threw the prop. a search party quickly found the prop for him.

You flatter us by calling it the Yellow 3 demon display team lol bunch of amateurs that can't avoid hitting each other, but we weren't intending to collide quite the contrary.

If the demons hadn't been powered by A123 that would be two burning lipos. Both packs are unscathed despite plumetting from a couple of hundred feet.

Yes roll on next year.

Cheers

Bob

We believe the 1/3 Pup had a speed controller failure. The theory goes like this:-
ESC went short circuit, therefore applying hard brake to motor.
Motor stopped, prop continued turning, unwound it's self from the shaft and bailed out.
The Pup landed safely and didn't half smell of "magic smoke".
All is well, just needs a new controller.
Even the prop was found later during the search and rescue for the miriad of 3 Demon bits.

If you look at the photos on GMAC website, the later ones show it flying without a prop.

Cheers
Chris
