Dave Doughty
Hi i have a OS 46 LA but i've lost the hand book, any advice as to how to set it up. It's second hand and iv'e been told it has been run in. I tried starting it today but just cuts out, could it have a duff glow plug? Ross Clarkson
Could be a few things Dave, including as you say, the Glow Plug. What temperature are you trying to start it and does it start and then cut out or just doesn't start at all?
Jonathan Lewzey
try adjusting the needle valve to the correct position. about 1,3/4 turns from fully closed i think . should tell you for definite in the instruction manual which can probably be found virtually on the OS website. Also, as ross says, try a fresh plug. i had an OS46LA which ran very well on a firepower F7
Dave Doughty
Thanks for the advice the needle valve was close to 3 turns out, iv'e changed that now and i'll have a look for the os website. The temp was cold it turns a few time then stops. Think i'll buy another plug and start again. Thanks Guys.
flytilbroke
Remove glow plug and check it glows, replace it if it does, it is likely to work. Open main needle 1.3/4 turns. DO NOT CONNECT GLOWSTART open throttle fully, thumb over carby inlet and turn prop over a few times to prime with fuel. Fuel should be evident entering carby. Set the throttle slightly open, connect glow start, and turn prop in normal starting manner. When/if it starts, let it warm then adjust the nain needle for best revs, then open needle three clicks. Fingers (which have been kept clear) crossed. Won't run? we will think again.
ken anderson.
same as above dave-also the engines that have not run for a while tend to gum up a bit and need to be run a bit off tune until they get hot and eject all the old oil etc from their inard's....bit like me ........ ken anderson.........stay clear of the prop........ Martin Harris - Moderator
Found a couple of different engines needed the old "finger on the exhaust outlet" trick for a second or so during cranking when starting them in sub-zero temps last weekend. Only works if you're runnng exhaust pressure to the tank of course. Oddly, this seems to work much better than manual priming - perhaps the higher velocity fuel atomises better? Don't overdo it or there's a danger of hydraulic locking...
Stephen Grigg
Ive found that on a lot of my engines also Martin
Pete Stevens
I would also check your fuel tank if above solutions don't work. I fly mainly gliders so my OS46 only gets occasional run out, its normally (Touch wood!) easy to start even after a long lay off. The only times it has played up is due fuel line/tank issues e.g. split line inside tank etc. I too generally use finger odver exhaust trick! Good luck

Dave Bran
Ha!, and I possibly split between DD and PC's locations, I'm part time resident in Rustington! I work with very strange old engines a lot, ones that can ice up their carbs in May/June sometimes, never underestimate the need for good fuel pressure!! Dave Doughty
Rustington, hmm i'm in Mile Oak, north Portslade. Not joined a club yet to fly with but i have visited one near my partners place in East grinstead where i am most weekends. going to run my engine a little more on the bench and set it up before i let it leave the ground. I was told i could take it to the field in EG an they would test fly it for me, which i thought was nice of them as i'm not a menber. flytilbroke
Pleased my glow motors do not ice up (yet). 1974 Vauxhall Viva 1100cc + a Ford Cortina I had did that run hard in hot weather. Bit embarrasing when near the front coming off a vehicle ferry. Yeah, most clubs are helpfull and have guys who will help. They tend to be unsung heroes. Dave Doughty
I used to have a mk2 Cortina 1967 pre crossflow back in the 80s of those were the days. My next bit of kit will be a charger possible a ultramat 16. Also toying with idea of repainting my flight box in jan.
