  1. I covered the wing of the Hurricane with lam film, I had intended to use brown paper but having a good result on the tail feathers I went ahead and done the wing. I am happy the way it has turned out, no wrinkles. pity I can't use it on my face. Slotting the tail plane and elevators the black etch primer come off the film despite rubbing down with 600 grit wet and dry. I have used car plastic bumper paint on the wing I hope that holds better.
  2. Hi Roger, our club has shared the flying field with sheep and sometimes cattle. we have an electric fence around the strip which we take down when flying, this has worked very well for us and the sheep or cows are not troubled by the aircraft. we have no noise restrictions as we are well away from residential areas though most fly electric there are some with large petrol engine powered models and 2 stroke models, these have no effect on the livestock. I am sure the farmer would agree to an electric fence if asked as it would save any damage to his fence. Ours is powered by a 12v battery which is changed weekly and recharged.
  3. I managed 5 flights today with my Mustang, it fly's great. but very cold despite the sunny day, early lunch and a warm house beckoned.
  4. I am very tempted to go with it Brian , I could repaint it later if I don't crash it through disorientation.?
  5. Getting back on track with the Hurricane, some mild weather enabled me to get down the shed and put some paint on. I covered the rear fuselage in lam film also the tail feathers, having some black etch primer I tried it out on the lam film giving it a light rub down first. At this point I am tempted do do a night fighter version, I know orientation will be tricky but flying last week with a Spitfire in dull weather was ok and it was a silhouette most of the time. It will be economic on paint all black although some were black on the underside only.
  6. 3 days flying weather has slowed up work on the Hurricane, for anyone building it I found the best way to fit the dihedral braces was to epoxy the outer panels to the centre section. When dry, with a razor saw cut through the veneer underneath then wrap some sandpaper around the blade and clean the slot up till the brace slides in. I then poured Gorilla glue into the slot and pushed the brace in , doing this a few times till the ply was coated with the glue, I then poured water on them and pushed them into the slot. when dry I trimmed them off and they just need sanding now. I think this way has more chance of getting the whole surface glued.
  7. Hi Brian, I have built all of those and if I had the option to build them all again I would go for the Ju88 as it is in my opinion the quickest to build, and follow with the P51B with the Hurricane last.
  8. Some nice Tiger Moths here, the Me 109 sitting on the wing in the loft reminds me that they used Handley Page automatic slots.
  9. Ow be ye in the West Country Richard ? faar away from civiloyzation, be ye settled in them thar caves. Actually I use a gas torch to heat the wire to cut the foam. I didn't know Ron was friends with Ian Duncan Smith, helping him with his ailerons. I used torque rods for many years without any problems when servo's were not so plentiful and expensive . At least they kept the mechanism internal. Having said that I am going to use servos in the wing of my Hurricane with cut outs aided by my 1972 Belling.
  10. I built one of those when they first come out, It was powered with an OS 40 fs which flew it in a scale manner but very under powered, I later fitted a 40 two stroke, more exciting flight but it did not sound as good.
  11. I bought a large De luxe Materials aliphatic resin to plank a Brian Taylor Hawker Tempest and found it worse for ridges than Evostik. I prefer Evostik resin w for structure work as it has good strength but I have found Gorilla PVA sands good and does not leave ridges . It has been on offer at some places I paid around £8 for 532ml where as De luxe materials is about £14 for a similar amount.
  12. I would be happy with that Maurice, one of the modelling mags, some years ago published photos of an aircraft at the Shuttleworth collection at various times of the day and different shutter speeds 8 pictures from about the same angle were quite different shades the colours were blue and cream. In the 1970's Ford Escorts were made in a few different factories in the EU and one particular colour a metallic blue had many shades depending on where the car was made and the suppliers of the paint. It was a nightmare for body resprays trying to get the right match . Paint matching has always been a can of worms I tend to use Humbrol as a guide and no one has said my models are the wrong shade.
  13. Spent most of yesterday flying this Hanger 9 Cherokee, the engine finally sorted it performed very well after initial problems. It had been 16 years since it was last used and on first flights it kept cutting out resulting in dead stick landings one of which was in the rough and took the front end off. Now that I am happy with it I will put the cowl on.
  14. Some more work done on the Hurricane last night, I built the rudder post into the fuselage when building it but defeated the object when I broke it off whilst sanding the fuselage. so now I have to do it as per plan. I need to push on with it as I have a few models to build and some repairs to the current flying wounded.
  15. Hi Brian, they are 3/32" laser cut sheet not quite square but not enough to worry about. I glued the uncut side to the body to keep them constant. Hi Dan , it is going to be powered by a Saito 82 f/s.
  16. I added the stringers to the Hurricane last night, I used UHU por to stick them on the foam and PVA for the body.
  17. Hi Jon, What I do is draw a line on the the ply fillet base where it protrudes from the fuselage, the straight edge should line up with the inside of the fuselage, lay some plastic film on the fuselage to stop the glue sticking the wings to the fuselage fit the wings to the fuselage with a gap to allow the the ply base for the fillets to slide in, glue the fillets up to the mark and slide in the gap tighten the wing onto the fuselage and allow it to dry, lay the triangle balsa on the joint and note the curve, where it starts to increase mark the point with a pencil then from there make a series of cuts at the back of the triangle not enough to go through form it round the wing curve using extra cuts till it sits on the ply base glue and pin it and when dry shape it, to get the concave curve, sand paper wrapped around dowels of various sizes will get the shape you need then use a light weight filler to finish off.
  18. This is the outer wing panel of the Hurricane, the cut out was done before the leading edge was fitted. i measured 10mm from the top of the wing and 15mm from the bottom at the rear, and cut in from the leading edge to the rear with a bread knife, the vertical cuts were made with a razor saw. remember to take the dihedral into account and angle the cut out to allow the mounting sit right. I don't know what happened to the other pictures Martin transferred over, they now seem to be back on the other thread.
  19. That's fine by me Martin, I was typing the notes as you put in the reply. If you can move this to a new thread it will save me from doing it again.
  20. I tried to put the text in after the photos and it was all over, the panel behind the cockpit with the step in was ply in the kit , I made a new piece out of 1/8th balsa as the ply would not follow the curve of the fuselage I also substituted the 1/16"sheet at the front for 3/32" as the foam deck overhung the sheet. The radiator flap was cut out and hinged with Oratex to access the wing bolt. I did not get the retracts from Richard as I already had some but I believe they are the same as he is suppling so the way I have done mine may be of use to anyone building the Hurricane. It is easier to mark out and cut the wing before fitting the leading edge, the centre section was cut first and the ply plates epoxied in place. they are slightly wider than scale as I made them to fit the legs I already had.
  21. I have been building the Hurricane on and off for the last 3 weeks. A few minor problems but going together ok.
  22. last week I ordered some spares from Leeds model shop they arrived next day by normal R.M. On Friday last I ordered some sundries from Model fixings after 3-30pm they arrived next day via R.M. No complaints about the service in the North East.
