I've never owned a power panel, I use to carry a 12V lead acid for the starter now I use a light 3 cell 2200mah Lipo - plenty of umph always! I hope to do away with glow sticks as well. Got myself a 1.2V glow starter which can be used with a Lipo - need to solder some plugs first. **LINK** PS. I'm not a fan of Lipos but - '..needs must'.

No Donald, it doesn't need 15 seconds but that's what I give it. It guarantees an instant start every time. Let's not forget glow fuel is cold and a nice wet engine leaves the plug damp. Using a 1.2V glow stick does no harm to a good plug at all. If using variable amps and such then much more chance of frying something!

I've had no trouble starting my glow engines in cold weather. The trick is to leave the glow stick on for 15-20 secs before cranking with the starter. i make sure engine is well primed and test the glow stick on a spare plug to make sure it's glowing bright. I run my 12V starter with a 3S Lipo. Also, the mixture needs to be fattened-up on both the top and bottom end. I had to turn out both needles on my 4st a 1/4 turn to idle well. Cold damp dense air requires more fuel.

Martin, I can't understand where your where your last post has disappeared to and why! It made me smile though, I know the glowing feeling we have with our simple method of propulsion.. Can't beat it!

Posted by cymaz on 21/11/2017 17:33:24: Back to my musings on bird wing loading.....I found this! Interesting read cymaz, thanks. I think someone needs to tell them about Wing Cube Loading.. **LINK** Also, it has to be taken into account whether the subject is a 'tail dragger' or 'feet dragger'.. Each bird is different.

Nice picture. I love to watch birds fly/glide and land, I suppose it's my fascination with flight and love of nature. Swans are like the heavy bombers of the bird world.. they have a decent wing span and also need a good take-off run. Too many factors involved to determine exact wattage - flight efficiency of a bird, feather density length of primaries etc etc.

That's what worries me Percy.. even with a nice 4 stroke petrol! Off to the field soon.. it's a gorgeous day for flying. Can't wait to smell the sweet nitro exhaust fumes from my Saito. it's perfume to my nose.Edited By ASH. on 19/11/2017 11:59:48

I use to work in a petrol station back in 70's when there was no self-service. I had no problem with petrol fumes then. However, I do remember the smell of petrol inside some of the cars we drove with their leaky carburettors - it was horrible! I think in a confined space the smell is nauseating. Good movie to watch on BBC TWO 13.00 and later on on BBC i-player.

Fantastic! A great inspiration - 'Where there's a will..." -
Hi Percy, sorry to say but Hobbyking are quite informal - they want to be your pal. I've had these same emails from them and just deleted. Things left in cart will be looked at another time!

Posted by Percy Verance on 28/09/2017 18:09:23: No handle ASH. Multiplex don't do clutter or dummy screwheads and the like. Even the neckstrap eye is detachable (makes cleaning easier). Thanks Percy but I think I'll stick with my Futaba with all it's bits and bobs. Anyway, mine don't need regular cleaning - I'm not that mucky! Edited By ASH. on 29/09/2017 00:19:31

Percy, the Multiplex looks nice but where's the handle !?
-
I have thought about having the aerial wire inside the Tx. Futaba do that on one of their Tx, (8J as Jon said). I think the signal strenght is stonger on that particular aerial, it's the reason I wanted to make the mod. Can't beat Futaba FASST for reliability.

A bargain at under a tenner ! **LINK**

Niall, have a look at the Seagull Pilatus PC-9 (ic version). It's a superb 46 size low wing semi-scale aerobat. Seagull quality is excellent and you can use all the hardware. Also, it's covered in genuine Oracover (Ultracote). It has a thick built up wing so flys beautifully, fast or slow. Most importantly - it's rugged. I flew mine with an Irvine 53, a 46 would be just as good.

I use Solarfilm Clearcoat for fuelproofing. It is a synthetic varnish which dries instantly. I also paint a thin line over all film edges and trim. It's time consuming but worth it. Never had a trim lift.

I agree with Andy48 above. Sounds to me like this guy is not serious if he's chatting about other things while learning to fly. It's a past time to him. I remember my first lesson was in the snow, I had got my instructor to leave work for a hour to come teach me that's how keen I was. I passed my A test within ten short flights and several hours on the sim. If I was teaching the OP's pupil I would not be so patient. I would be raising my voice and getting severely annoyed if anyone was wasting my time just for a joy ride. He needs a serious talking to. My tu'pence worth. Edited By ASH. on 04/09/2017 01:51:58

A bit off topic - but I have a question in regard to engines.. What are the advantages and disadvantages of a long stroke engine? I would think they're more prone to vibration, Jon, your thoughts please.
-
It's something I've never fully understood myself. Maybe it works similar to side thrust.. and/or a pendulum effect?!
-
Not too far off topic I'm afaid.. I bought a Workzone 12V Li-ion drill the other week for £30. It's absolutely perfect for my needs, just what I had been looking for. It's small, nicely balanced with battery inside the handle. and it's light. I came across it purely by chance, Aldi is not a shop I visit regularly. I prefer Lidl for my fresh croissants.

Tim, glad you enjoyed flying your P-47 Razorback, I have one too, still in the box. I also use short servo arms (Futaba), 3rd hole from centre, about 1cm. It gives the most torque without any restriction.. I also try and use 100% servo travel for maximum resolution. I'm not sure going over that percentage gives any more. I would like to know - opinions anyone? Tim, I've sent you a PM.

Lovely model Tim, and thank you all for the tips. Will help me greatly for when I get mine up and running! ps. Tim PM sent

Clearcoat by Solarfilm to fuel proof wood. Best to glue box first.
