About Me

  1. Thought I'd start building the Andy Conway PSS BAe Hawk T1 which is considered by some to be the ideal starter PSS model. The photo shows the short kit that I acquired from Neil Gilles of www.igull.co.uk and also the required canopy can be acquired from www.vortex-vacforms.co.uk. The plan is offered online from the Power Scale Soaring Association at www.pssaonline.co.uk Have started this between doing jobs on my F86 Sabre whist waiting for things to dry on that model.
  2. Hi. Going to build the Paul Grey RCME hawk. I have the plans but wondered if anyone has a copy of the building the rcme hawk video or a copy on cd or memory stick, that I could purchase. many thanks jon

  4. Good Afternoon, All. I am looking in to learning sloe soaring and I am very interested in Andy Conway's BAe Hawk as a starter! I am eager to read build posts if anyone can point me in the right direction.
  5. Once again we had a good time at The Orme last weekend for the last PSSA meeting of the season but I decided against trying to maiden my Sea Hawk so no aerial photos now probably until we return in the Spring I'm afraid. There were good 20+mph winds on the Saturday but being from a North Westerly direction it meant either a tricky landing amongst the rocks and gorse to our left or a lengthy walk up to the top where there is a substantial and flat grass area. I flew my Correx BAe Hawk a couple of times and landed that to the left ok and then later on flew my 1/8 Super Corsair. This time I decided to land up top which was great, once I got there! Thanks to Harry Twist for navigating me around the rocks and getting me there safely whilst still flying. As the afternoon moved on the low sun on the landing circuit became another problem and so I decided not to risk the Sea Hawk. More accomplished pilots than me would and did fly their larger planes and land them without incident but equally there were others that weren't quite so lucky so for better or worse I decided to call it a day. Lack of wind on the Sunday made it virtually impossible to fly any PSS planes so that was it for the weekend. So all I can offer you for now are photos of my BAe Hawk and Super Corsair in action and another of me and my Sea Hawk very much on terra firma. All photos courtesy of Phil Cooke.
  6. I've decided to build my 1st 'proper' pss model, not correx 😢 or even foam, but traditionally from balsa. The chosen model is Andy Conway's plan of a Bae Hawk. Any advice, photos or modifications will be graciously recieved. I don't see it being ready for the slopes this summer, but hopefully by autumn/winter.
  7. The model is an Arrows Hobby BAe Hawk 50mm EDF & the board is their Vector gyro. Its settings are operated by a 3 position switch on the 4th channel & gives Off/Stability (auto wings level) /& 'Dynamic'. It is brilliant for hand launches, set Stability & you can toss the model any old way, it levels itself & climbs way. Then switch off, or if it is particularly turbulent you can use Dynamic to dampen the disturbances. Since I retrofitted them to my Arrows Hawk, T33 & Viper with scores of self launches I have never had a single occasion where they have failed to get away cleanly. Turning to Jeti specific on the setup, I have set the Gyro Mode switch 'Required pre-flight position' to Launch (wings level) as well as the throttle arming switch (I use a latching switch) to Off. If you try & switch on the transmitter with the switches in the wrong position the screen shows a warning indicating what is wrong & you cannot operate it until you correct it. Further both the Gyro switch & Arming switch have voice announcements as an additional safeguard. ps crossed with Martin!
  8. Have finally got around to fitting spektrum rx to this model which as the Reflex Gyro on board. The manual says to plug the servo leads into the channels as indicated. That was fun control surfaces all over the place. Eventually I just plugged them into the conventional channels on the rx and lo it works. Anyone else have this problem or just me?
  9. Mr Fro, If you want to sell those models and engines which are pictured on the previous page you will have no difficulty in selling them because apart from the BAE Hawk, they are all sought-after items in good condition. If you want to assemble the models, as you suggested in the thread "The Big Question," please go ahead but once you have assembled the models get an experienced modeller to check them over and to fly them for you, assuming that you want to see them in the air. If you want to fly them yourself, please join a club and learn to fly on a trainer designed for the job. None of the models in the pictures is suitable for an absolute beginner.
  10. That's understandable. Mind you, EDF can be noisy too - I've been using one for something at work *may not be exactly it's design purpose* and I clocked it at 134 dB full chat on 48 V. Here's the motors I have: I've got the gubbins that goes with them in a box somewhere. Plane wise I've got a tatty looking foam BAE Hawk: A composite SU37: A Cessna Skylane-182 & a Piper J-3 Cub: A composite G500: And there's a foam robbe BAE 146 in the loft which hasn't made it out yet. I've got all the bits for everything but since the wife put me to work digging out a bloody great veg patch, I don't really have the enthusiasm to root them out for some quick pics! Oh, the slabs are 600 x 600 for scale.
  11. Just brought the Freewing Hawk in base colour .Want to paint my own paint scream on it .Fed up with all the Hawks in Red Arrow colour .I know the RAF have some Hawks in black but can someone tell me what colour the RAF paint there Hawks ,the one the pilots train on at RAF Valley in Wales .Also what is the best paint to use on these foam aircraft ,do not want the foam to be damaged by the paint Thanks
  12. Hi Phil, If you mean like the Phantoms on HMS Ark Royal in the 1970s, then that's not it. I've seen what you describe on trainers like the Precedent Hiboy. Repeated hard landings have bent the main legs, but the nose leg stays the same and the model sits nose up, resulting in positive wing incidence after landing. These are EDF models are built as per the supplied kit, e.g. DH Vampire, DH Venom, BAe Hawk and sitting as the manufacturer intended them. It did occur to me that a bigger main wheels or a shorter nose leg would give negative wing incidence, but I would have thought it would have to be pretty extreme to make much improvement.
  13. Does anybody know of any plans or kits (not foam) that are designed for an 80mm EDF? I am looking for something that will take the FMS 80mm unit from a Bae Hawk. There seem to be some for both 70mm and 90mm but I can't find anything for 80mm.
  14. My BAE Hawk T1 from the Andy Conway plan is starting to come together and look like a BAe Hawk. Still loads to do, but I thought I'd post a photo. F86 - Sabre is also coming along nicely at the same time and hopefully both will be glass clothed and sprayed at the same time.
  15. Dear Enthusiasts, Just wondered if anyone is building the Vampire? My reason for asking is that I'm considering building one as my first 'traditional' build. I've 'built' & flown more than 20 RTF's & foamies & following a rather harsh 'landing' I now find myself with a 50mm EDF & electronics salvaged from an Arrows BAE Hawk. I'm assuming these leftovers would be ideal for teh Vampire? https://tonynijhuisdesigns.co.uk/mini-jet-vampire-32.html Kind regards, Julian
  16. Yesterday's attempted 50mm MiniJet maidens didn't end well, confirmed the perils of hand launching and I might be forced to revisit the launch ramp option. I had a 100% EDF failure rate - the EFlite BAe Hawk wouldn't even taxi, let alone work up enough speed for a take off - tiny wheels on the fixed undercarriage and spongy moss do not make for a high speed experience. The Gnat nosed in and hit the deck on hand launching and the Jet Provost reared up near vertical before falling to earth ten feet in front of us, breaking off the wing and splitting the fuselage. They were both easily repaired on return to the workshop and are ready for another go soon.
  17. Hi guys, I've decided to step up from correx and foam pss models and build from Andy Conway's Bae Hawk plan. No doubt I'll be asking plenty of questions along the way... Hopefully you guys will be able to help with any problems I come across 😁😁
  18. Hi guys, been converting this former 80''s vintage static desktop display model to FLY!! Hope you like, any questions please ask. It''s 11.5" span by 13" long.
  19. With the BAe Hawk now being painted I've brought the F86- Sabre back onto the building board. This will end up being painted in the Imperial Iranian Air Force paint scheme. Hopefully this will also be finished for the PSSA event on the Great Orme in May.
  20. BAe Hawk fuselage and ailerons now been covered with the Freddie Mix ready for sanding tomorrow once completely dry.
  21. Cold up the patch, but hardly any wind. Perfect BAE Hawk weather!
  22. Good evening this is a first thread for myself. Has any one built this plan from RCME plan pages? Bae Hawk by D. Crawford, 0.40 jet style. Is there a copy of the build article around? http://www.myhobbystore.co.uk/product/16138/rc1358--hawk Thanks Jim
  23. Pilot is being painted and best position so it dries ok. This is the pilot for my F86 Sabre, the 2 BAe Hawk pilots can be seen on the right.
  24. Well I'm back after a week and a bit without posting, been busy on full size aircraft. Today I decided I better start looking at making the Freddie Mix which is used to fill the weave left in the glass cloth. The Freddie Mix is made up of equal volumes of floor varnish and light filler. A good shake of talc and some paint to give it a contrasting colour. Mix well into a paste and add water until it's like pouring cream. You should be able to paint it on and it will flow into the weave. Tried it initially on my Sabre tailplane and if it works ok I'll let you know and then proceed to use on the BAe Hawk. Picture shows the various items I used for the Freddie Mix in the foreground.
  25. Well it seems that RCM&E are not content with just one Special a year, they have now decided to go for another.... two specials (the existing Autumn and the new Spring Special) and that means two plans from yours truly!!!!! Now fortunately I had the next TND project on the go which was a DF powered Hawk so this is now going to be the Spring Special Plan. After the roaring success of the DF Vulcan i though may be I have been missing a trick with this ducted fan lark....So the Hawk seemed the next logical step....So 42" span 4.5lb AUW very near scale, flaps and retracts and 70mm 6S fan unit to power it. Test flight is scheduled for next week so lets hope for some dry weather... Happy days
