Martin McIntosh
Dennis, I have never done this before either but to link the packs seems to just add unnecessary wiring. The servos and Rx. will draw a comparatively small amount from one pack. Look back on this thread to see my wiring before installation. Alan Jarvis
Dennis I am talking about it on its back so they are over the tubes when right side up. There is far more than 3mm on mine and they are taped to the frame to prevent them dropping on the tubes when it is right side up.. I separated the motors for redundancy figuring that if say one battery went down I would still have power and by connecting the two inner together and separately the two outer it would balance the power. There is a little extra wire but it can only be a few grams
Luckiestpants
Thought you may appreciate a couple of pics of the pusher version of Tony's Vulcan. Built by my dad ready for its maiden early in the New Year
Ian101
Your dad has done a cracking job of that. Looking forward to seeing the maiden flights of these beauties. I hope some videos will be posted. Regards and happy Christmas. Ian
Robert Armstrong 2
Anyone built one of these as PSS?
Alan Jarvis
See this one by Mark Kettle for PSS **LINK**
Mark Kettle 1
Cheers Alan for the link, I'm still to put a motor in the tail-cone. I will try this spring. Tim Mackey with his and a report on PSSA glider here: **LINK**
Mark Kettle 1
I'm sure Robert Tony's Vulcan model would make a idea PSSA subject, just balance as on the plan, it will be a lot lighter without the electric power gear in, so include a ballast box / area to take ballast so you can carry on flying when the wind gets up. Ian101
Have any of these Vulcans flown yet?
Martin McIntosh
Mine has been ready for ages but the sheep fence round the field is still there so no chance. I would be interested to know if one has successfully taken off from short grass with EDF and retracts.
Alan Jarvis
I am still waiting for some decent weather.
Martin McIntosh
I am currently in Fuerteventura hoping to have a look at the local flying site whilst I am here but believe me the weather conditions for flying are far better in the UK at the moment. Tropical storms and 40+ mph wind and not very warm at all. At least the booze and food is cheap. Don`t go there!
Glenn Philbrick
I am also waiting for better weather before giving my Vulcan a flight. I have not fitted retracts so will use a bungee to launch. Here is what they look like in White.
Colin Leighfield
Hi Martin. Fuerteventura does mean windy! I've been there, it's why they always used to hold the wind-surfing world championships there.
Steve Adams
Hi Luckiest Pants, Please could you tell me where you got those wheels from and the price as they look great and very scale Kind Regards Steve
Alan Jarvis
Took the Vulcan for it's maiden today and did not go well. I have not fitted the retracts and it was a hand launch (several) and I couldn't get it going. There was no wind with the windsock hanging limp. It just doesn't seem to have the power but I guess a 5-10 mph wind may have helped. I have now fixed a hardwood block in the front retract bay and put a hook in for bungee launch. Mark Kettle 1
Sorry to hear that Alan, I'm sure the bungee -or- some wind next time will help.
Martin McIntosh
That does not sound too good for my retract version going from grass then. Had a look at our patch today. The sheep and the fence have gone and the grass has had its first cut but the ground is still a bit sticky looking so shall wait a while longer. Martin McIntosh
Went flying today so took the Vulcan with me to try the taxi. I could nearly have walked faster and even when the grass is dry and a little shorter I cannot see it going. Such a waste of a lot of money, time and effort. Anyone got some tarmac handy to Buckinghamshire or want to buy it?
Alan Jarvis
Martin I know how you feel. I am now thinking of taking the fans out and using it for PSS.
Tony F
Gutted for the pair of you would it be worth converting to pusher prop version with some big motors in there ? Should give it the ooommpphh needed ?Tony
Mowerman
Or you could try a couple of Wren 44s
Martin Rowe 1
This is my first balsa model I have ever made. This one does not make we want to do another. Mine just won't get going. I could aways go for 4s but I'm reluctant to speed any more!
Martin McIntosh
Pushers would work but defeat the object of a first EDF model. The Wrens sound good! I thought of 4s but doubt if any worthwhile would fit. Will just have to hang it from the ceiling I suppose. I could of course try a tractor on the front as well. Glenn Philbrick
When I started this build I soon thought that power would be marginal to say the least. Retracts off grass would be a challenge for electric ducted fans. I decided not to include them on my build, when I received the fan units from hobby king as you can see from my earlier posts I tested them and found they were very inefficient mine only pulled 10A. I uprated the fans with more bladed units and now have about 350watts of power. This is still not a lot but my Vulcan weighs just over 4lbs all up so should fly. I intend to bungee launch it and am building a launch pad to see if this will get it airborne. I will be disappointed if it does not fly as with all the others building it has taken quite a lot of time. My advice to anybody building one now would be to look for more powerful fan units even if that means running 4s.
