SkippyUK
According to BBC article , Lewis Hamilton states after flying with the Red Arrows - "It hasn't made me want to fly my own plane - but I do enjoy flying model aeroplanes. Although I tend to crash them quite a lot.". So who is going to volunteer to teach him how to fly model airplanes without crashing them - anyone fancy having Lewis on the end of a buddy lead? Maybe he'll let you have a go in his road car and teach you how to drive fast. Skippy
Bob Cotsford
Somehow I doubt that the young fella has a sedate flying style. I can'tsee him watching a Super 60 floating gently around. Power and lots of it seems more his style. Edited By Bob Cotsford on 28/06/2013 10:30:

Steve Hargreaves - Moderator
I'd certainly swap him a go with my Wot 4 for a go in his car.....
Area 51
Wonder if he and James May would help boost awareness of the sport (our hobby) and thereby ensure we get to hang on to a few flying fields and turnover some planning problems.. Just a thought.

Ben B
Posted by Percy Verance on 28/06/2013 12:52:49: Wasn't there another F1 driver a few years back who flew models as his hobby? Senna used to fly r/c. Quite good at it he was too by all accounts.
Gavin Mack
Juan Pablo Montoyo used to fly model planes, this would suit Lewis Edited By Gavin Mack on 28/06/2013 13:14:
Peter Christy
Emmerson Fittipaldi used to fly helis - I think Senna did too.
Phil 9
"but I do enjoy flying model aeroplanes. Although I tend to crash them quite a lot.". Is not that what we all do. The only difference between flyers is thier definition of "a lot" Edited By Phil 9 on 28/06/2013 13:59:

Quite possibly both - I've seen film of Senna flying pattern-type models.
Tony H
Senna used to fly Helicopter and fixed winged aircraft, he mentioned it on more than one occasion on his videos, and a short video clip of him flying a trainer at the end of Senna the movie documentary
Phil 9
Alex Zanardi and Heinz-Harald Frentzen also flew model planes

pensioners1938
My son used to be a technician for Renault and they used to test the F1 cars on Elvington. They were testing the aerodynamics on the body work; the first photo is one of the rear ends they tested. This lump of carbon fibre and other materials cost about £30,000. One of the test drivers brought this model along which he flew at lunch time. This was about three or four years ago.
Phil 9
The bbc showed an interview with one driver with his young son flying a model in a car park (it was not a very suitable flying site) he crashed it into one of the many lampposts. But I just cant remember who it was.
John Privett
One of our club members is an ex-Renault F1 team mechanic. He left them about 2, maybe 3 years ago. I don't recognise the model in the picture, but it's possible it might have been his. I'll ask him about it next time I see him. Regarding Senna, I have a magazine article somewhere about his model flying - it was in one of the French R/C mags a good number of years ago (before Senna's death.) John Privett
I also recall a TV documentary even more years ago about the Hesketh F1 team. At one point in the programme the team members - led by Lord Hesketh himself - are shown attempting to fly an r/c glider and making a complete hash of it... Trevor Crook
Lewis used to race R/C cars as a lad, so he'll be familiar with the major orientation issue. With his hand/eye co-ordination and reactions, he'd be a fast learner. His biggest problem would probably be finding the time and location to practise.
