Bob Hayes
I just about finished the tail today. I think I'll dress up the bogus tail skid.
Bob Hayes
I'm doing final assembly and getting ready to balance her. I weighed in at 3.76 kilograms with all the junk I added. I don't think that's too bad. Anyone know what wing incidence is? I have -2 on the top wing, bottom wing level, +3 on the tail. Area 51
Lovely job there Bob, where did you get the white tyres ? Extremely smart.. good luck on the maiden
Bob Hayes
Thank you! They're the discontinued Williams Brothers Vintage wheels. When ever I find them, I buy them.
Harrier Mate
Brilliant job Bob. Really looks the part and luv the prop (just for static or flying too?). And just when I thought my build was catching up!!! Im sure the maiden will go well. But best of luck anyway. Looking forward to the photos in due course. Bob Hayes
Thanks Bud. The prop is an Xoar WWI Scimitar for flying. I know it's not correct but know one makes an Axial prop.
Bob Hayes
Anyone know what builders are using as the cg on this? Plans say 120-135mm. I set to the mid at 127.5 and had to ad .34kg to the nose for a slight nose down. Thanks guys
Harrier Mate
Hi Bob, looking forward to photos of maiden flight. I reckon mid point should be fine. About to complete lower wing of mine. v slow progress.
Bob Hayes
Another day with no maiden. 12mph+ winds and I'm not risking it.
Don Fry
I finished one of these recently. Lovely flyer. Am getting the impression that the stated cg is a bit conservative, but safe enough. Only watch point is on the initial run off, keep the tail down until it is rolling well, then allow the tail to come up. If you lift the tail too quickly, it tends to fall over onto its nose. And as expected, as long as that tail is down, it weathercocks. Vice less in the air, and easy to land, except if you come in on a crosswind, it will weathercock when the tail drops, not dangerous, that's what it does. Best of luck, lovely looking thing. Harrier Mate
Managed to get some time and renewed impetus to continue with lower wing. Decided to adopt the saw tooth leading edge sheeting as per the real ac. Still to be attached as I need to add interplane strut attachments first. Harrier Mate
Any sign of maiden yet Bob???
jeff2wings
Just how I did mine, also changed T/E as well , if you add spar webbing makes for a much stiffer wing
Bob Hayes
Nice job Harrier. No maiden yet. You guys will be the first to see pics and vid.
Harrier Mate
Jeff, Wings look awesome with your saw tooth sheeting. Hope mine look as neat.
Harrier Mate
Still playing with ideas for scale ball and socket interplane strut connections but i guess sometimes the simplest method is best! 6ba bolts seem a bit excessive though. LOL.
Bob Hayes
Hi Guys! What is going on? Sad to say I haven't flown my DVII yet. Can you believe that? I was having issue with the old 70 and didn't want to risk it. I purchased a never run 70 Surpass that I have yet to break in. In the meantime I did snag a few Flair kits. I now have the Flair Puppeteer and Legionaire Nieuport 17.
Harrier Mate
Hi Bob, Still working on mine. Been away on detachment for a few weeks so have been unable to progress. But hopefully get started again this weekend. Just have to insert interplane strut fixings to complete lower wing. Then can crack on with upper. Lucky to find the other 'scout' kits. I would love to find the Flair Bristol Fighter as next project... But NIB they are even more rare than rocking horse droppings!!
jeff2wings
Bob, you did the right thing changing the engine, my D 7 had a RCV 60 SP in it first and kept cutting out (btw it glides quite well for a biplane) then a Vega 60 4s that was unable to get it above 50 ft altitude, then finally stuck a ASP 70 in it that’s perfect for it , and well done getting the puppeteer & Legionaire as I think Flair have all but stopped making kits. Harrier Mate pm coming your way
Bob Hayes
Any of you guys know someone that has and would scan a copy of the Flair SE5A instruction booklet? I have the kit and plans but no instructions. THANKS!!
Robert Parker
Hi Bob, I've got a set already scanned, will need a contact email or forum address Regards Robert Edited By Robert Parker on 01/12/2015 21:00:
Harrier Mate
Finally decided to keep the interplane strut attachments as per the plan.... Spent too long fiddling with ball and sockets... Think the suggested method is significantly lighter and more robust.... Ah well.... We all like to learn the hard way!
Harrier Mate
Then made 2 left hand sides by epoxying one of the attachments wrong way round having soldered nut in place... Dohhhhh! Managed to unsolder and re-do on correct side without destroying epoxy bond.... As below.
