john stones 1 - Moderator
Another very neat worker, nice job Kev. I love the wavy joint on the elevator tips, try doing that with a scalpel John
Kevin Fairgrieve
Thanks guy`s. Pinhole fairies, I wish. I do like to build tidy. I do not always however succeed. Next to skin the top of the tail plane. Not looking forward to that. Kev
Nigel Day
Good spot on the elevator halves Kev. I'm handling it in a similar way.
Pup Cam
Looking good Kev! Nice subject and scheme. I too have been using CA for the first time as the main adhesive on my Triplane - I've gone for a quick build! Looking forward to seeing it at Tibers but remember when you fly it to keep the airspeed up with a tapered, low wing aeroplane on landing. Please don't ask me how I know ... Alan Hopefully Alan my build will not take as long as the Tripe!! Any way it is Wednesday so here is my weekly update. Decided that the plan was wrong with respect to one elevator half showing almost 1/8th longer on one side. The two core`s from the kit were closest to the other so built two halves using one side of the plan only. That worked fine and I soon had two halves. Still in a very rough state, and needing plenty of shaping and sanding. So after three weeks what do we have so far? Well not a lot really. Kevin Fairgrieve
Slow progress again this week. Only had time to add the jig tabs to the ribs to make the build easier. I am waiting on a delivery from SLEC today with I hope some hard 1/4 sheet that I can rip down for the wing spars. Not looking forward to the wing build!!!! On the ribs R1 and 2 do you add the vertical stifner on both faces? Kev
Nigel Day
Yes you do Kev, for R1. That means cutting another pair, one for each R1. Edited By Nigel Day on 29/10/2014 08:20:
Kevin Fairgrieve
Thanks Nigel. I have made and fitted the doublers on R1. If you look you can see a couple of "stifners" on R1 and 2 (running vertically) by the spar gaps in the top picture. Do I need those both sides as well? Kev
Nigel Day
I've got doublers/stiffeners on R1-3 Kev and from the plan, it looks as though there are ones on both sides of R1.
Danny Fenton
Hi Kev, great to see you are getting stuck in the wing is the hardest bit, but its not so bad I had fitted those vertical ply plates to just one side of ribs R1 and R2. The doublers for R1 are both sides, 2 are missing from the cut kit. R2 and R3 only have the doublers on the one side. Cheers Danny
Kevin Fairgrieve
Thanks chaps. Doublers on R1 both side`s fitted and I will go with just the one stifner. Kev
Kevin Fairgrieve
Reinforcements have arrived. Should be enough to see this through. First things first. Take a sheet of 1/4 firm/hard balsa and strip down for the spars. I normally go to SLEC and select my own wood. For the first time I have left that choice to them. I have to say they have done a top job. All grade`s as requested. Kev
Kevin Fairgrieve
Before I do anything further I am doing a few experiments. No glue just trying to get a feel for things. Kev
Nigel Day
That's a good idea Kev. I'm still trying to get my head around how the wings and centre section go together. The first wing bottom spar is on the plan and the ribs dry fitted on top but I'm still cutting leading edges and generally prepping for 'the big push' - hopefully tomorrow. I'll be looking over your shoulder (and trying to update my blog with mistakes progress)
john stones 1 - Moderator
Yes good idea a dry run things make more sense when you see them in situ Get yourself going Nigel it's only wood John
Kevin Fairgrieve
A few more experiments!!! I bet this sets a few tongue`s wagging!! Just roughed out an R10 reinforced with some ply, standard servo and some 2mm rod. Food for thought. Danny Fenton
Are you worried about servo access Kev or are you just going to bury the servos? Cheers Danny
Kevin Fairgrieve
There you have it Danny. That is my main concern, if a servo fails then it would be major surgery to change it over. Access hatch would not be scale and would need to span R9-R11. Still mulling this one over! Kev
Kevin Fairgrieve
Really not sure about how I intend to do the wing yet. So. I revisited the rudder. Kev
