So while looking through my tubs on my projects shelf I found this Enya SS50 that I picked up a while ago, it was missing the cylinder head and prop driver and the piston had suffered a bit of a trauma. I had started work on it making new head, removing the dead bearings and bead blasting it and then sticking it in the tub along with a SS40 that needed reassembly after cleaning and then forgetting about it! The piston was the biggest problem and was the reason for putting it aside.

the piston crown looks a bit of a state but that's due to me attacking it with a file, and here's the reason why in the next two pictures

not sure what happened to cause that damage, but it jammed the ring into ring groove, the distance from the top of the ring to crown is only .8mm so the only safe way to release it was to file it (carefully) away, so with that done.......

that's the easy bit ,making the ring groove, pinning it and making the grooves for the circlips will be more of a challenge

I had thought of pads in Teflon or brass but can't help but  think that the Enya bros used clips for a good reason ? 🤔 If I  make a fixture for machining a radius the same as that of the cylinder on the pads it should  work OK, only one way to find out!

Will have a go later, meanwhile I've re-machined the fuel tank on the Hallem reducing the thickness from 2.5mm too 1.3 , It's somewhat lighter now!

will have to do something about the thread it's well wonky, it's  a 1/4 bsf maybe take it down to 1 ba ?

Wow! That went right first time, found some ptfe rod and used the old piston, had to reduce the length of the pin by 40thou

You can see that as it travels across the  port the pad is in constant contact with the cylinder, so we are good to continue reassembly 👍

Enya SS50 done just need to find its silencer and give it a run.

After a couple of hours working on my super 60 resto ,took some time to make the ignition timer for the Hallem, I  had been pondering over its design, the photos I had found didn't really help, however it turned out the answer was right under my nose in the form of a blueprint for the engine (remember most of these were made from kits) on the late Ron Chernich's website Model Engine News

Just about finished with the machining on the Hallem,  apart from making the points that will have to wait until I can find some 1/16 brass sheet that's in the workshop somewhere 😏 it's just a case of stripping and thoroughly cleaning and final assembly.

I have replaced the original exhaust with this duct I made should help keeping the exhaust muck away from the model (if it runs lol!)

Nice work Jeff!

I've also been messing about with a sparkie - an 1940s O&R 23.

It's been a bit of a battle in the ignition and fuel departments;

I did try to use a 12v motorcycle coil and the existing contact points, but eventually ended up using a modern CDI unit.  The original prop driver has been replaced with a turned ali disc which has the required magnet pressed in.  The Hall sensor was cable tied to the housing to begin with, but is now held with an ali strap.

Fuel-wise, I had little luck with a 3:1 petrol/chainsaw oil mix.  Yes, it would fire but not run for more than a second or two.  I was advised to use a mix of Colemans camping fuel (naptha based) and thick SAE50 engine oil. Success!

Now that it's a runner, I need to replace the leaking plastic fuel tank (probably try to turn one from ali), then perhaps fit some sort of variable speed control for RC use.  Maybe a silencer too......

Oh yes, then decide on a suitable airframe to get it back in the air again!

Tim

I love my Enya 50. I may fit it to a restored WOT 4 which I cannot even give away!

Interesting Tim,although I don't think the cdi will do much for the engines power to weight ratio  ?🤔 probably better than the motorcycle coil though 😆!

My O&R 23 (repo) had damaged points, as in one of the contacts had broken off, probably why it had glowplug in it when purchased, btw don't use methanol in original plastic tank as it will damage it

I don't know whether this applies to the Enya SS50 but earlier Enya engines were supplied with both a high and low compression head like my Enya 35 pictured below. The low compression head was intended for running in. Perhaps they had abandoned this practice by the time the SS50 was made.

Hi Jeff the comp will be bit softer as it a ringed engine. Has it improved with running ? Was the ringed SS40 made for heli use ? Im pretty sure the SS 40 I bought some years ago was ABC construction . OS made ringed versions of some engines for heli use / continuous high speed running like the 32SX .

Looking back at the first pic it does look otiginal piston had a dykes ring ? These had even lower comp when turned by hand but formed a much better seal under combustion pressure.

Engine still runs OK in video .

Nice work, Jeff!

I've also been tatting about with an old engine - that 1940's Ohlsson & Rice .23 that I posted about a while ago.

I've run out of things to hang on it; CDI ignition, bearer mounts, ali fuel tank, simple throttle, and exhaust stub and silencer.

It runs on the 3:1 camping fuel/SAE50 oil mix, and is just able to drag my Murg around the circuit!

The engine has really been an excuse to learn and improve on my fledgling machining skills on the lathe and mill.  All of the mods are instantly reversible.

Hi Tim, You were a bit unlucky with the O&R 23 that you "happened to find".

They were made from 1938 until 1952, and only the 1947 model (which you have) was lugless (radial mount only).

However, there was a beam/radial mount adapter available, for beam mounting, and there was also a tank mount accessory (see photo).

I have a lot of Ohlssons and O&Rs and I like them a lot. Shame you found the only model with inconvenient mounting.

I  am getting nearer to fulfilling my ambition of flying a o/d model with an engine i have made

Hi Jeff looks geat . If you want any of the polished parts anodised then get in touch .

Thanks ED ,it's funny you should mention that,I did buy a kit from Chronos with the blue dye with which I tried to do the crankcase/ front, but with a less than satisfactory results, most of the dye being washed out in the sealing process, so it was into the bead blaster which looks o.k. I obviously need to experiment with it and find out where I'm going wrong 🤔 but at least it runs!

Nice work Tim you are half way to making a complete engine! Maybe you should have a go?

Taking a rest from  balsa bashing (and the fact I'm about to fit a new kitchen 😐 ) I thought it time to revisit a old project, the Speary 5cc diesel.

IMG_20240223_204714998_MFNR.thumb.jpg.4097b29dbe9b3ded41311cd5f983fa27.jpg

the engine did run but it was difficult to start and had poor running and power, so I stripped it down and checked the port timing.

20240223_135317.thumb.jpg.a227f15969f3f899104d761ac32bf29b.jpg

the exhaust and transfer being well off ? Humm, how so,well I used the drawings from Hemingway not the originals from '46-7 and compering them there is a error in the later drawings, so back on the lathe then .

IMG_20240223_204714998_MFNR.thumb.jpg.4097b29dbe9b3ded41311cd5f983fa27.jpg

I also have another case that I'm going to use for a spark ignition version
