kevin b
I have been asked by a club member if I can identify these models, all built around 1950-52. Fortunately I am not old enough to remember what they are. Can anybody out there help please ? They appear to be a club "mass build" and the front one is sporting a MAP logo on its tail. As far as I can gather they were all built from plans. Thanks. kevin b.
Fylingdales Flyer
They look like Southerner 60's, designed by Bill Dean in 1946 and kitted by KeilKraft. Still available as a print wood kit from Ben Buckle, it makes a good electric conversion. Mine is covered with Solartex and powered by an Axi 2820/10 with a 40 amp Jeti ESC and 3s Life battery. Peter Miller
No, Southerners had round stringered fuselages. Not sheet boxes They look more like Wren, an aeromodeller plan. In fact having looked at my old APSplans catalogue I would say definitely Wren. by G RWollet, span 42" .5 tp 1 cc
kc
Peter seems to be right - this is the Wren plan
Fylingdales Flyer
Doh! I was looking at the eliptical wing and the shape of the fin and cockpit window profile. I completely missed that the fuselage was wrong. It looks like it would be an easier build than a Southerner though. Graham
Robin Colbourne
Apart from the leading edge cutout, it is very reminiscent of a conversion my Dad did to fit an Allbon Bambi in a KeilKraft Eaglet. A fair bit smaller than the models pictured however.
kevin b
Great stuff fellas. I will check with him to see if it rings any bells. The photo was taken on Salisbury Plain and used in Aeromodeller in the club section. We aren't quite sure which issue, but it was before 1953 and after 1950. Looks like I probably have another build to do ! kevin b.

SIMON CRAGG
Great photos. Without wishing to hijack the thread, I think these Ben Buckle / vintage type models are fantastic!. I have got a Joe Elgin Playboy, which I have flown for over ten years, and am running next years club vintage comps. (Time & Glide, Touch and Goes & Precision). They really have stood the test of time. How many of the current crop of ARTF's will still be being produced in 70 years time?. Ok,they need a bit of head scratching / effort to put together, but by and large they are relaxing to fly and are big enough to see at a distance. Love 'em!. Peter Miller
Just as a point of interest. My next model after Destiny will be the Buzzard Bombshell to 62" span for a .30 FS ow that is a vintage model that I have been meaning to build for donkey's years. and I need something easy after Destiny
Piers Bowlan
The Hep Cat is a nice model Giuseppe and very similar, except the Wren has an elliptical wing. The Buzzard Bombshell looks very relaxing to fly Peter, judging by this video. Skip the first three minutes as the model is quite a long way away - it gets more exciting later! This one is 72in span and powered by an OS52.
Old Geezer
Oh dear! That's another couple on the list - the Wren looks very appealing ( and the Buzzard Bombshell too ) - unfortunately I'm not that good at covering undercambered wings, if the Wren was given a flat bottomed section would it's performance be much compromised?
Peter Miller
The Buzzard Bombshell has very little undercamber and the there is a 1/4" sq. spar were the undercamber is deepest. My version as coverimg undercamber is always a little tricky. The BBshould be great for thermalling.
kc
The Buzzard Bombshell plan is here on Outerzone -actually there are 3 different plans if you search. All are 72 inch though so presumably Peter is going to produce his own plan for a smaller version at 62 inch. Look forward to seeing that! Anyone building a Southerner 60 or Mite might like to know that laser cut ribs are available here. Handy because it's a tapered wing. Lots of ribs for vintage and other designs available there too. If you live near enough to Leicester and have the time available during normal office hours (M-F), you can ask to spend some time in the BMFA Library/Archives. There is a full set of Aeromodeller from that era - actually Ron Moulton's copy which he bequeathed to the Society.
