I think Ken is right - new is the only way to be sure you get good radio gear unless you know the seller. i reckon even the cheapest new set would be a safer bet than secondhand, some of the starter sets from respected makers are very cheap. The Graupner MZ12 seem a reasonable starter set at 115 pounds although the Spektrum DX6 is more the standard starter radio now. However check the price of extra Rx before buying into any system because most people end up buying quite a few Rx to have multiple models flight ready. Can make a difference as Spektrum rx often cost less than other makes.

If you are an experienced modeller buying secondhand airframes (without radio) is much less risky than buying radios. . Club sales can get a suitable model at low cost but asking around at the club might also find a good model.

Donald said " I have gear, well smashed, over the years. It survives. Perhaps not for precious things. But for a trainer, it ain't precious."

Even for a trainer you cannot afford to use radio gear that is less than 100 percent reliable! In todays world any crash into something or someone will cause a claim for damages.

  • 2 weeks later...

So I've picked up the setup and all seems good. I've centred all the control surfaces now just need the weather to improve so unlikely to give it a run out this weekend!

Looking at add ons I'm interested in getting an APC 11x7e prop and some 75mm wheels to aid with the ground. Admittedly I've had kids crawling over me when trying to look but can anyone suggest an outlet that stocks both? Hobby King have the wheels but not the prop. Likewise any prop stockists don't have the wheels!

I've found some wheels on eBay but not sure of the spindle diameter - need to get to the garage to measure when it stops raining as the 75mm wheels have a 4mm hole.

Either way looking forward to giving it a go.

Measure the axle, 3 - 4mm, and type that in fleabay search, e.g. 4 mm spacer. You will get all manner of lengths and diameters

From now on, save all bits of tube and washers for these events, and be prepared to dremel bits of tube square cut
