Tom Ryall
Posted by kc on 04/01/2017 16:58:20: Check the nicads still work on your old gear. The cost of buying new Nicads for Tx and Rx of an old 35mhz set comes rather near to cost of new 2.4 ghz radio! My old gear went a long time ago....about 20years! kc
I think Ken is right - new is the only way to be sure you get good radio gear unless you know the seller. i reckon even the cheapest new set would be a safer bet than secondhand, some of the starter sets from respected makers are very cheap. The Graupner MZ12 seem a reasonable starter set at 115 pounds although the Spektrum DX6 is more the standard starter radio now. However check the price of extra Rx before buying into any system because most people end up buying quite a few Rx to have multiple models flight ready. Can make a difference as Spektrum rx often cost less than other makes. If you are an experienced modeller buying secondhand airframes (without radio) is much less risky than buying radios. . Club sales can get a suitable model at low cost but asking around at the club might also find a good model.
Don Fry
Tom, I have gear, well smashed, over the years. It survives. Perhaps not for precious things. But for a trainer, it ain't precious. If the price is right, if the seller looks reasonable, you are old enough to make your mind up.
Tom Ryall
Thanks to all. I may now have to drive the length of the country next week so I might be able to view the setup first. Now to work on the deception plan....
kc
Donald said " I have gear, well smashed, over the years. It survives. Perhaps not for precious things. But for a trainer, it ain't precious." Even for a trainer you cannot afford to use radio gear that is less than 100 percent reliable! In todays world any crash into something or someone will cause a claim for damages. Don Fry
Sorry KC, you have your view, I have mine. We perhaps agree to differ. My view is I fly a toy plane over ground where I may kill a hare or deer, if the animal is unlucky. Either way I will cook the kill.

Tom Ryall
So I've picked up the setup and all seems good. I've centred all the control surfaces now just need the weather to improve so unlikely to give it a run out this weekend! Looking at add ons I'm interested in getting an APC 11x7e prop and some 75mm wheels to aid with the ground. Admittedly I've had kids crawling over me when trying to look but can anyone suggest an outlet that stocks both? Hobby King have the wheels but not the prop. Likewise any prop stockists don't have the wheels! I've found some wheels on eBay but not sure of the spindle diameter - need to get to the garage to measure when it stops raining as the 75mm wheels have a 4mm hole. Either way looking forward to giving it a go.

Tom Ryall
Many thanks - just the steer I was hoping for. Have managed to resist the urge to give it a go so far due to the winds. Shane as the forecast rain hasn't materialised yet...
Tom Ryall
And is the APC 11x7e a decent prop for a FoamE Wot 4, or would 11x8 be better? I saw it in a discussion but can't find it again?!

Don Fry
But at the end of the day, the thing about these things, is the wonderful frisson of fear when you open the throttle as it stands there waiting to go.
Tom Ryall
The wind didn't ease yesterday so it survives another week! 70mm wheels and a Gemfan 11x7e prop from Rapid RC models have been ordered.....
Tom Ryall
Prompt service from Rapid RC but unfortunately the wheels are too narrow?! Much better diameter wise but the hubs are narrow so there's too much play - do spacers/washers exist?! Seems odd to be so narrow.
Denis Watkins
Could you not just move the wheel collets inwards Tom? And yes, any form of spacer are available and tube offcuts.
Tom Ryall
Unfortunately not - I've moved it I. As far as I can but the thread stops so I need a spacer of some sort?
Denis Watkins
Measure the axle, 3 - 4mm, and type that in fleabay search, e.g. 4 mm spacer. You will get all manner of lengths and diameters From now on, save all bits of tube and washers for these events, and be prepared to dremel bits of tube square cut Edited By Denis Watkins on 18/01/2017 07:29:40 Edited By Denis Watkins on 18/01/2017 07:33:
Don Fry
Make some spacers, plastic, plywood, steel washers, just the job scrap bits laying about the house, a fairy liquid bottle should be examined. Come on mate, get up to speed here
