The five stack exhaust was a 'Mossie only' feature and even then there are variations.

The reason was simply that the 6 stack would have fouled the wing root radiator so stack 6 was combined into stack 5.. For convenience, although not necessary, the same arrangement was used on the out board set, unless it was Australian built as they used a 6 stack outboard,

On later marks the Merlins were further forward to accommodate the 2 stage supercharger which gave room for 6 stacks to be used inboard as well. This is a 1946 UK built version.

Then there were the covered "saxaphone" flame damper exhausts for night working. wink 2
