Jez Harris 1
Hi all.I'm currently finishing off a 1/4 scale Auster Aop9.The cockpit includes masses of wiring on show which hangs all over the metal framing which looks a bit like a rally cars roll-cage. I was hoping to utilise the servo cables to replicate the wiring but need them to be all black.I've tried spray paint and little enamel pots but it either cracks off or fails to dry remaining sticky for weeks.Any ideas what I can use?Jez
Andy48
Remove the pins from the housing on the lead and use thin black heat shrink, then replace housings.
Allan Bennett
I've used Humbrol matt black enamel in the past, and matt black water-based acrylic. The acrylic does tend to flake off if the wire is bent or moved, but if they're anchored well and you touch them up after final installation, you should be good. Denis Watkins
Cables vary Jez, from different suppliers, but some have a coating of release agent on their surface during manufacture and paint cannot stick well. It is a faff , but wipe down the cables with meths 1st, then prime, then colour, black
Steve Hargreaves - Moderator
Some servo leads are silicone & I doubt you'd get paint to stick to that. For other plastics a wipe over with Prymol or similar might help. Try an offcut lead first though...it would be embarasing if the Prymol melted the insulation & cause a short.... Chris Walby
HK do some braded/woven sleeving which you can shorten and the diameter increases, then if you stretch it out (after feeding over the servo plugs) might work. The sleeving comes in all sorts of colours as well as black. Ping me if you can't find it on the HK site
Chris Barlow
Posted by Jez Harris 1 on 30/01/2017 19:57:05: I was hoping to utilise the servo cables to replicate the wiring but need them to be all black. No paint thickness to crack and flake off, dries in 10 minutes and will work on PVC and silicone.
jrman
Try artists acrylic paint ( in tubes) mixed with "canopy glue" . Worked for me on a plastic cockpit surround.
Phil Green
Erm.... why not use black wire?
