bouncebounce crunch
Peter McDermott De-Havilland DH-9 for fifty thousand pounds. not Peter selling, it is now owned by a collector and up for auction Edited By bouncebounce crunch on 30/01/2018 09:24:
Cuban8
When one sees examples of what is often passed off as 'art' (think piles of bricks, dead sheep and dirty unmade beds) for many millions of pounds, then fifty grand for one of PM's aeroplanes is a snip. Cuban8
It's many years since I've been to the RAF Museum, Hendon but I hope that they are still displaying this............ **LINK** The pictures really don't do it justice an awsome achievement by a true artist and model engineer. kc
Even if Peter Mc was getting the money I wouldn't expect it to be paying the current minimum UK wage for the number of hours he put in! However as with painters it's not the artist who makes the fortune it's the dealers.
MattyB
Beautiful model, but despite that I would be surprised if it makes £50k - it's an incredible modelling achievement, but ultimately the DH-9 is a bit of an ugly duckling that won't appeal to many. Edited By Cuban8 on 30/01/2018 09:49:44 It always grieves me that the term 'creative' has been hijacked by the artistic faction as if only the arts involve creative thinking. All of us here who make model aircraft, for instance, (even from kits) have to solve problem and set backs by inventing a way round - and that, in a small way, needs creative thinking. Scale modellers at the top of the tree are incredibly creative yet get no credit generally. One of my former work colleagues was also a model engineer of unbelievable talent. Although he worked in instrumentation like me he would sometimes disappear back home to his workshop and make the components he needed for his ideas to work. He was once at a meeting and a company director asked where in Rolls-Royce he'd had his blade tip clearance measurement device made because he didn't think the company had anywhere it could be done. Roy admitted that he'd made it himself at home in his 'shed'. He made steam locos that eventually sold for a lot of money but, Like Peter McDermott his pay rate would have been nowhere near the minimum wage. I agree with MatyB. It's a fantastic model of a fantastically ugly aeroplane - but each to his taste Geoff

Keith Lomax
I'm sure that when PMcD sold it, it would have been for nowhere near that amount, so somebody along the line is seriously profiteering out of his skill.

Geoff S
Sadly, at that sort of money, it's unlikely to be flown again. Geoff
TJ Alexander
Hate to put my foot in it, but isn't that a DH9a, not a DH9? As a small child, I remember dragging a member of staff at the IWM in London into a WWI exhibition to point out exactly this error in labelling 1/72 models on display. I have no recollection of his response, but i don't think he was impressed. Or remotely interested lol
