Prostate Cancer

Should have had appointment with consultant Monday to let me know how the treatment had gone. Had phone call on morning to say it was cancelled due to the virus, she would phone me at the allotted time. Said everything was all good and fine and the psa levels were undetectable, did not want to see me again (I have this effect on people ) and would refer me back to the specialist nurse later in the year to monitor me.

Boy that's a load off. Stay safe guys.

Have my appointment with the consultant in just over a weeks time so fingers crossed. Out of interest are you still on the hormone injections as my doctors cancelled my monthly appointments due to the virus.

Andy my injections are 3 monthly ones next one is due on 23 april so can expect call about what is happening.

Strange thing about all this is my bald plate is covered with hair again and no one knows why. Madam runs her fingers over it with that look in her eye.Gulp,

Having had breast cancer in 2008 and then last year aggressive prostate cancer I was sent for genetic tests. Turns out I have a faulty BRCA2 gene. This is most often associated with breast cancer in women. However when men carry this faulty gene it can lead to prostate cancer, often an aggressive type. Yet men are very rarely checked for BRCA2. Strange given that prostate cancer is the most common cancer in the UK?

My latest appointment was a telephone one and my PSA is down at 4.5 so is still stable blood tests every 4months

Andy had phone call on Friday to say injection would be going ahead tomorrow morning, 0900, first patient in the surgery so everywhere will be cleaned down and steralised, got to go in side door at appointed time not the waiting room, got my surgical gloves ready and masks which I picked up at shows last year.

Way to go Martian.

Actually I'm very fortunate as my treatment seems to have been pretty successful. Just had by blood test results back and 6 months after my radiotherapy finished my PSA is down at 0.09 However I am still on hormones as the cancer was a v.aggressive type and I have the faulty gene too. But I'm very positive and doing well. Trust all the rest of you are too.

Glad all have had a good outcome from our treatments.

My PSA was <0.1 so have another PSA test and a follow up with the consultant in 3 months.

Off the hormone injections now, but still getting the odd hot sweats. The only down side I have is the frequent trips to the toilet all through the night. Started at once per hour after the RT but that has improved to every 2 hours. Tried giving up the nightly Tamsulosin but that just makes thinks a lot worse.

Surprised we don't have any new posters to the prostrate club. Sure it will not have cured itself just because we are all stuck at home self isolating.

So come on chaps a PSA test is very quick and could save your life.

HI Andy,

Largely on account of reading this thread and a having displayed a few of the usual symptoms, I went for a check up. Fortunately all clear on the PSA front. It's easy to be complacent until its too late though, so I would encourage everyone on here to get tested.

To all those that have posted so far, keep up the good work!

I am a late comer here but was diagnosed April 2019 after a long wait to see a consultant. I am actually very disappointed with my local NHS as I had had urinary problems for a while before anyone suggested I have my prostrate checked. I am 72 and started having trouble in mid 2018 which was treated with antibiotics but did not fully go away.

Anyway bottom line is I have just had another scan as it seems it may have spread to my bones and Lymph nodes, possibly to my bowels too. - SCARY

I am waiting for the results and an appointment with an oncologist - hopefully soon.

I'm appalled your diagnosis was so delayed sadly the early signs are often not recognised your GP should have picked it up but as I understand many don't . It seems you have to be personally aware and insist on a examination and PSA test . This is why I started this thread ,some men are embarrassed (ignored it is not a pleasant way to die) and many are simply not aware ,so it needs continual campaigns to heighten awareness . Please if you read this and you are over fifty get checked and keep spreading the word caught early it's durable left to late and it is a miserable way to die .

Brian, like Martian I am so sorry that you have suffered with delayed diagnosis of prostate cancer. I can sympathise as this was also my experience. I even managed to get a PSA test which showed 10 but my doctor told me not to worry as it really didn't believe it was cancer. I had to wait 6 months to see a consultant who then v quickly diagnosed a very agressive cancer that had started to spread beyond the prostate.

However after 14 months of hormone treatment and 8 weeks of radiotherapy I now have a PSA of 0.07 and today my consultant told me he didn't need to see me again until March 2021.My life is almost back to normal again.

So we have to all keep alert and make sure we insist on regular checks. If in doubt get a second opinion. I now wish I had insisted on seeing a cancer consultant earlier. Due to my unfortunate experience I have done a lot of reading and am much better informed now. I try to make sure I ask all the questions possible when I get to see a doctor. That said, my consultant has been excellent and I can't fault the treatment I have received once it started.

Keep positive, there are so many treatments now available and research is ongoing so outcomes are improving all the time. I trust that the scans don't reveal anything negative. God bless.

Dave yes there are still to many GPs who do not or will not rely on a PSA test but he guys have right to get checked and taken seriously even see another GP ,with an aggressive cancer 6 weeks is to long never mind 6 months

Sorry to hear that this diagnosis has come late Brian. My cancer was only picked up be shear chance in my attempts to get a scan for my bad back.

Think this of what comes of the UK not having a national screening policy for Prostrate Cancer.

My wife has friends husband in a similar position to yourself so assume they will now put you on hormone injections to lower your testosterone.

Good luck with your treatment.

I am already on hormone treatment, since May last year but no further tests were done till November and my PSA was still 10. Since then I have had a phone apt with a consultant who referred me to Oncology, that was mid may and the Oncology consultant rang me last Tuesday and set up another scan which has now been done. Awaiting further news.

See my oncologist this month Brian so will know more then. My initial PSA score was 16 but did fall significantly after starting the hormone injections.

Have you had a biopsy taken yet?

Good morning followers of this topic and would like to advise of my situation although not as serious as some people. I had to have neck and chest CT scan on Monday for some other problems and was advised later they had gone further down the body to check prostate area. I was advised my gland was a little over sized and was able to tell them I had the digits test 5 years ago and was noted slightly enlarged then. So during various blood test taken in the week an extra sample taken for the PSA levels this has come back as level 2 and thankfully no further action required for now. All the best to other followers
