Mark Elen
After loosing my modelling mojo just lately, I have decided to go back to what I enjoy most... building. I have dabbled a bit just lately with EDFs and have come to the conclusion that it’s not for me. So, having enjoyed the Ballerina build so much, I started looking for another Peter Miller design to have a bash at. Peggy Sue 2 jumped out at me. (It helped that I had the free plan) My first taste of aeromodelling was a Kiel Kraft glider with built up fuselage and I have not built up anything like it since, so mind made up, I made a start. Mark Elen
Bit more done today. Got the second fuselage side built over the first and made a start on formers. Cheers Mark
Peter Miller
Hi Mark, Like you I just love building. I have to have something on the boar. I think that you will love Peggy Sue 2. She just asks to be thrown around the sky non stop. Mine only flies straight and level when inverted.

Mark Elen
Thanks Peter. I went flying the Ballerina on Saturday afternoon. Went really well, but our field has a short hedge on finals if the wind is from the west. Apparently, it’s a bit taller than I thought. Just clipped it with the wheels, but it dragged her in. It’s broken the wing sheeting on one side. A bit more done on PS2: Cheers Mark
Peter Miller
Sorry about the Ballerina but it should be pretty easy to repair. Peggy Sue is coming along well.
Mark Elen
Hi Peter, Yes, it shouldn’t be too hard to repair. I’m toying with the idea at the moment of stripping off the white covering, repairing the damage and recovering, rather than having patches. The hedge had a load of thorns in it and it’s done more damage than I thought. I did a bit more on PS2 today. Starting with F2a. I had to relieve the bottom a little to get the tank to fit. Peter Miller
That lookspretty easy to repair. A small square hole with chamfered sides and a matching patch put in. Whexn I am fitting the tank I put silicone sealnt round the neck. It stops the tank moving and prevents fuel sexepage but is easily removexd. kc
You could disguise the repaired patch with some clever coloured trim on both wings to look as though it was built that way!
Mark Elen
Hi Gents, Many thanks for your comments I followed your recommendations on the Ballerina Peter, and did just that with the silicone for the tank. It works great and, like you say, it’s no great hassle to get the tank back out if you need to. I had need to do this just recently. The Saito 40 that I have in the Ballerina has been the sweetest thing, never any problem starting, normally first flick, but recently, it has been giving me problems. I first thought I had tank problems, so it all came out and it still wouldn’t start on the bench. I finally found the problem - a small slit in the fuel feed line. Feed line sorted, and it back to normal. Starts a treat, it now just needs a decent pilot😂 (I’ve always said, ‘I’m more of a builder than a flier&rsquo KC, I’m still weighing up options. Knowing me, I’ll take the hard route, strip and sort. We’ll see Cheers Mark
McG 6969
Hi Mark, Fine to have you back at the building board. Enjoy as much as you can, young man. Cheers Chris
Mark Elen
Hi Chris, Hope you are well mate.👍 Have you got anything on the board at the moment? Cheers Mark
McG 6969
Everything OK here, Mark. I'm still in progress with my unfinished Vicomte 1916 build since the end of last year... A lot of stuff came in between since, but projected planning is to resume the progress next winter. I am about to start the restoration of a crashed vintage Graupner glider which is intended to give me some iron covering practice for the Vicomte. I might consider a resto blog as soon as we get back from our post-summer holiday early October... Keep up the mojo, Mark. Mark Elen
I have been away on holiday this week, so nothing done. Got home today, fully recharged and did a little bit on the undercarriage mounts. Still got to make the slots. As far as I can see, the plan isn’t quite correct, as the 2 slots need to be offset so that the piano wire legs can sit next to each other on the bottom. No big deal. Something like this: Cheers Mark Edited By Mark Elen on 21/09/2019 15:46:
Peter Miller
Yes, they should be staggered. I just checked my original plan and the side view only shows the one but the plan view shows the staggered position of the holes.
kc
When making this type of u/c mounting I always saw the slot slightly undersize and then run a drill of the exact size through afterwards.
Mark Elen
Hi KC, Great tip there. Bit too late for this build, but I’ll bank that one for the future. I got the slots filed out last night, then I have epoxied this all together this morning. Now waiting for it all to set. Cheers Mark
Mark Elen
Servo mounting rails done and in with mini doublers: Cheers Mark
Mark Elen
I got the first couple of stringers added this morning, along with the tapered window supports. All of them are oversize, ready to be sanded down to correct size. Cheers Mark
Mark Elen
Bit more done this afternoon, I got the cabin sides cut out, my trick with these was to use upholsterers spray glue to stick the 2 blanks together, along with the pattern - traced onto greaseproof paper then glued on to the blank. Half hour with the fretsaw, then probably another half hour with a Permagrit rotary tool in the Dremel. Separate, then clean off the glue with Cellulose Thinners. I also made up a card template and cut, wetted and stuck on the front end of the fuselage. I’m giving thought to not fitting the tank bay floor, then if need be, the battery can go under the tank if I need some additional weight at the front. Mark Elen
Bit more done tonight. I spent quite a while measuring and marking out for the bottom side stringers and got them on. Also sanded down the sloping tops of the fuselage sides ready for the side 1/32” window ply. I notched the stringers so that the sides will be flush at the back.
