Rich Griff
There does not seem to be a Control Line section on here ? Is that part of the hobby dead ? Have fond memories of Cox, stuka, fledgling, cosmic summit, kk champ, phantom and mite, radian, demon, plastic hurricane, Veron summit and lots of others....aeromodeling free plans galore. Storing mates new in box cosmic summit as well as pair of combat kits with new engines...he wants to try combat, was a free flight in his very early teens and even appeared in aeromodeling, a Londoner at the time. Control line section anyone ?
kc
BMFA members will have seen plenty of control line stuff in the BMFA magazine.
Rich Griff
True...a great mag, but not everyone on here ( the whole world can visit etc. ) is a Bmfa member.... I suppose the clue could be in the name, RCM and e... Can't find a free flight section either....real skill needed for that..... Capt Kremen
Unless you are 'in-the-know', you are probably unlikely to encounter control-line activity these days. Add to which most (all?) those (including this scribe), who enjoyed heady ether and castor oil engines, 'Laystrate' lines and rotating on the spot, get giddy just getting up out of the armchair these days. Much as I enjoy 'the good old days', nostalgia etc. etc. I can't see many a younger person keen to participate in C/L, (or free-flight dare I say), when there's all the wizardry of a quad with camera, GPS, ad infinitum tech to play with. brokenenglish
The FF and CL enthusiasts mostly have their own Web sites. If you're looking for RC modellers that occasionally dabble in a bit of nostalgia, you'll find that on here, but if you're looking for serious CL fliers, it has to be the Barton Web site. Rich Griff
Yeah I suppose so, attention span of gold fish and needing hourly button fix.....instant gratification. Let's face it half the kids these days couldn't find there way out of a paper bag never mind actually make anything.....what a country we now live in. Yep, get up too quickly and fall over... I think us olduns are made from different stuff, and like proper music like pink Floyd and pink fairies, along with a bit of Vaughan Williams and Mozart etc.....which is probably exactly what our parents said eh. Mike Etheridge 1
There is a Control Line club that my nephew Nigel belonged to called the 'Three Kings Club'. They used to fly at Three Kings Mitcham, but more recently they had a tarmac circle constructed on the Croydon Airport site where I flew once. I assume they still exist?. Nigel who moved north was also a member of the Bartons Club and used to fly regularly at the Nationals up to about 2006. Phil McCavity
I lived and worked in Mitcham for 10 years and didn't know there was a CL club there.I was a member of CAMFC for a couple of seasons but then joined Sutton and District. Robin Colbourne
Here's the Barton control line site: Barton Model Flying Club If, like me you've hankered after one of those Wonderwings Aerostars that were flown at the FA Cup Final about 1977, and were a regular feature in the parade ring at the Sandown Park model shows, this is the page you want for plan downloads: Wonderwings Aerostar Plans downloads This is the model in question (picture by Michael Palm from BMFC webpage):

Mike Etheridge 1
Robin, when they flew the Aerostars for the last time at Sandown Park my nephew was one of the flyers and did in fact acquire some of the Aerostars which he may still have ?. I did meet the chap who organised the original displays including the one at the Wembley Cup Final, and he explained that with the safety and insurance issues that crept in it made it too difficult to arrange future contests. He told me that even Jimmy Greaves wanted to 'have a bash' at flying C/L at Wembley !.

I bet your nephew did not mention the fly away, it went from one end of the arena to the other and up out of the stadium before crashing in front of one of the goals, all in front of the Queen. Peter Drennen owned Wonder Wings in it's dying days and Jim Caroland was the display organiser. Hammersley one was one of the regular pilots. Mike Etheridge 1
Peter, I have just checked with my nephew, who has not flown control line or RC planes for a few years, that he still has some C/L models. He confirmed that due to his move north his C/L planes are not in good condition. They include the fuselage for an Aerostar, a Nobler, a Spectre (kit bought by me in 1976) and some combat models. Before he moved North he with others picked up the Aerostars from Jim Caroland's garage and flew them at Sandown Park. When he moved North the majority of the Aerostars were kept by others including speed record holder Paul Eisner who I sometimes see at Epsom Downs. He is interested in obtaining the plan of the Aerostar wing so I gave him the information on this blog. He knew nothing of the fly-away at Wembley but would have only been 14 at the time. I can remember the Sandown Park show which was on the Saturday prior to the Cup Final at Wembley on the Sunday. (Or was it the following Saturday ?) However I was amazed at the Combat show at Sandown Park with the two teams and planes in corporate identity, one team in red the other blue, and several planes in the air at once. When I sat down to watch the cup final I was almost speechless when the planes appeared, and what a spectacle!
Danny Fenton
Control line is still alive and kicking, in several formats from combat, through carrier to aerobatic to scale. Not to mention the speed crowd at Barton. You just have to seek it out. Many have reverted to FB groups, and indeed I have set up a Scale Control line group, (search FB for "Scale Control line - UK" ) which has around a hundred or so members. CLAPA are doing well and holding many events at Buckminster. Aeromodeller often has articles on control line, and there is a new hard circle being built at Buckminster as we speak, well it was prior to the latest Covid escalation. The generic control line group (search FB for "control line enthusiasts" is really popular. 4.5k membership. Cheers Danny
