maurice northcott
Hi All, On a non-scale model design that has a horizontal stabiliser mounted at the middle of the end of the fuselage, what would be the aerodynamic change(s) if that horizontal stabiliser is repositioned on the underside of the fuselage? Thanks in advance maurice
Wookman
Nothing you will notice. Just take care to maintain the incidence.
maurice northcott
Thank you Wookman, I thought that would be the answer. 😀
MattyB
Nothing critical aerodynamically, but it will almost certainly be uglier and easier to damage on landing…
Geoff S
I built a Precedent/SLEC Funfly some years ago and the design called for the tail plane to be on the bottom of the fuselage but regular practice was to move it above so that it was clear of the ground/grass. AFAIK moving it had no effect on the flying performance. I passed my 'A' with it anyway. Not sure where the current kits place it.

Engine Doctor
Yes as already said the main issue is its proximity to the ground. Super sixties were frequently modified so that the stabiliser was on top of the fuz to avoid damage when taking off or landing . No difference in the flying or handling though.
Martin McIntosh
Depends on if you want an accurately aerobatic model or not, and whether it is high or low wing. Generally, low wing high tail or vice versa. It can greatly influence knife edge flight although there is much more to it than that. Most current F3A types are mid wing/mid tail. On a simple fly about model you probably would not notice any difference.
