Mine automatically runs at full blast for a about 10 minutes on startup whatever I set the temperature on.

Hi Andy it not on start up thats the problem but on close down . Thats when it needs a few mins blast at full heat to clean away any carbon build up if its been running at low temp for a while.

In case of any confusion, the way these work is they only have two operating modes.  Temperature control backs off to the lower setting when the thermostat senses the desired temperature has been reached, returning to full power when it drops sufficiently below it, so extended running once the desired temperature has been reached is always at a much lower heat output, best described as [almost literally] ticking over.  This is insufficient to burn off combustion deposits from the metering jet area hence the best practice of giving it a 10 minute blast by increasing the thermostat setting well above ambient at the end of a session.

Try not to run out of fuel - they don't like it and can take quite a [worrying!] length of time to re-initialise.

Surely it doesn't matter much when it gets a good blast.

That is because most of them are supplied with a clear green plastic fuel pipe with a bore that is too great. Once out of fuel it takes ages for the fuel pump to refill the fuel line to the burner as the pump has a very small capacity with each pulse. A smaller bore pipe avoids this problem and it will guickly restart should you run out of fuel. It avoids air bubbles in the fuel line too.

Hi Andy Yes it does  especially if its been run at lower heat settings for some time. As trying to start from cold with a sooty glowplug mesh can often cause loads of white smoke or a failure to start. A blast at full throttle for a few mins before shut down burns the soot off and makes for easier starts.
