My wife might be right! Maybe I do have too many Airframes!

Recommended Posts

My son Byron grew up with both Grandads being modellers and most of my friends as well. when he saw my then brother in laws new garage he looked for a while and then said, shame you have no aeroplanes, you must ask my dad as he has lots! Byron thought all garages had aeroplanes in them!

Looks ok to me and well organised. My late wife supported me in my hobby as I supported her in hers.

Still not quite sure what to do with TJ?

At least model aeroplane don't keep going for 30 years!

My wife also had a horse, far more expensive and time consuming than model aircraft so she couldn't complain.

The only thing that would bug me if I had so many models that I couldn’t get anything done in my workshop. Luckily I can use my garage for model storage. It’s nice to have enough space to do projects.

Having said that I find it very difficult to clear my bench . I guess part of modelling for me is saving bits and pieces for which I eventually find a use. When building kits I save the off cuts and always find something to do with them . Same goes with most materials . It’s quite fun recycling bits and pieces into repairs and new models.

My working planes "wall hang". The non operational are in the roof which by the way I personally insulated and boarded out. Interesting my contribution of old airframes only occupies a tiny proportion of what's up there!

There are two more full walls. 😁

The original intention was that each could be unhooked and flown at a moments notice. Now "double stacking" means others may have to be moved first.

All foam and scratch built apart from the LIDL and Cheetah chuck glider conversions. All the scale types should be recognisable except perhaps for the silver and red one!

Thank goodness for a high Victorian ceiling and a picture rail.😉

I don't think any of you really have that many if i'm honest.

Moons ago in my first phase of model flying I knew a guy who literally loved the hobby more than his wife. He had a 3 bed flat as part of his job. One spare room was his workshop and I kid you not, it was incredible. There were planes everywhere - complete and incomplete. It was literally his main thrill in life. Unfortunately his wife didn't share this and by his own admission she got fed up of it and ended it with him. Thankfully she let him keep his hobby rather than rob him of it as part of the divorce!

So he showed me the rest of the place, the next spare room (remember it was a 3 bed flat) was stashed full of airframes - some hanging from the ceiling, others standing on the floor etc. More in a cupboard.. and there were bits on the table in his hall way too. The only places he didn't have anything were his bedroom (allegedly - not sure I believe it to this day if i'm honest lol) and the living room. I did see the living room but even that had airfix planes on the shelves lol. He said his brother was great at building them and he was crap but his brother couldn't build balsa planes but he did it every day after work (I kid you not, he literally did - every spare minute was RC plane building to him). He really did love the hobby as one should.

Personally I think it's an amazing hobby too - just like model railways (there's an 8x4ft in my sons room) and as one lady at the southern model airshow pointed out to my missus a year or two back "it's a wonderful hobby, it gives them something to look forward to and keeps them out of trouble". My missus reply? "hmm.." lol. She enjoys the show but doesn't enjoy the thought of 'clutter' at home. I can't understand it myself. Thankfully the kitchen table is no longer home to aircraft but is now only covered with chargers and batteries at my end of the table. Apparently I have to work on that..

Whatever you do don't do as I did.

I wrote a spreadsheet listing all my models, then left it open on the computer screen when I went down to the garage/ up in the attic to see if I had missed any.  I came back to find all sorts of uninvited and uncomplimentary comments had been added...  😲

Fortunately it was all lighthearted, as my girlfriend is very supportive, for which I am very grateful. 🥰

I went one further and setup a database. Everyting (chargers, batteries, etc) now has a sticky label with a number attached so that I can quickly mix n match to various other bits.

You'd be wrong 🙂

I believe at  the last count Paul Marsh was approaching several hundred models, as mentioned on the thread he started when members post their new models.
