  1. Posted by Mitchell Howard on 18/12/2020 23:39:01:.... I can get on board with the idea they're able to do their own R&D. I've seen it happen, but it doesn't read well to know that FRSky started out horribly unsuccessfully until the copied directly a JR radio. Where did you get that from? FrSky started by producing plug in modules and receivers to allow the conversion of 35MHz transmitters to 2.4GHz. These used the Futaba and JR form factors. As I understand it their first foray into transmitter production (the Taranis) used a case mould that had been created for another company, not JR but using a similar layout. Internals were not copied from JR or anyone else beyond using commonly available RF chips. My series 1 Taranis is still going strong 6 or 7 years later and my Horuses (Horii?) are solid, well built and reliable units. As for OpenTX, it's a capable system written and maintained by a dedicated and professional team. I have had no issues with it in 6 years of using it.
  2. Jon, I would wish you a Merry Christmas but... Take care of yourself!
  3. Posted by Martin Harris on 18/12/2020 00:23:41:I think you're right Gary - a mod's responsibility is to guide the tone of a discussion rather than correct its grammatical content - talking of which, perhaps we should return to the main theme of heaping praise and platitudes on the blushing heads of the new moderators! Nice to know our new Mods are optimists . Must be an age thing, the term 'Mods' still brings to mind a picture of Parka clad youngsters in skinny trousers riding Lambrettas with a month's wages worth of mirrors bolted on the front
  4. Brilliant idea with the heat treatment Eric, one worth remembering
  5. My previous Panic made a nice club sport model on a 52 2 stroke so I'd say a 70 4 stroke would be a nice fit.
  6. I've not really done a lot lately, a little progress on one wing of the P-40 but enthusiasm is a bit low at the moment. To date I've removed the sloppy plastic retract unit and it's bellcrank, cleared away the broken vac-formed plastic leg cover, removed the balsa wheel well ready to re-locate it and cut all the ply needed for the new retract mount. Oh yes, and fitted a 1/2" wide * 1/4" ply spar brace across the retract bay. Who would have guessed that BlackHorse would cut wingspars as 1/4" wide strips of 1/8" ply? Half a day's work spread over several weeks! I have sorted out a couple of other project though. First was to move an old computer desk from the shed up to a spare bedroom, install my building board and some under shelf lighting and start migrating tools up there leaving the living room coffee table free for maintainance and in the hand jobs that can be done in front of the TV. Second, I've installed ISRM RF upgrade boards in my FrSky X10S and X12S transmitters and started uploading the latest firmware to all my receivers - not a small task! Why did I feel the need to upgrade? Why not? I like tinkering
  7. Posted by Nigel R on 12/12/2020 22:01:19: Ripmax Bolero would seem to fit the bill. 6S5000mAh might work in that? it would, if you can find one in stock. I used 4000mAh 6S in mine but there's plenty of room for a 5000 and plenty of wing area to carry the weight.
  8. I've had two very authentic looking emails supposedly from Paypal informing me that 'PSD2' secuity levels were being implemented and that I needed to click on a link to update my details. If I didn't respond my account would be closed blah blah blah. These were very polished and professional emails and only the link addresses gave them away. Off to [email protected] with them!
  9. Posted by Gary Morton on 11/12/2020 20:12:51: I must see if I still have those on the bookshelf upstairs, a bit of nostalgic reading
  10. Have you calibrated the sticks? Also are you using a stabilised receiver, if so have run configuration on that?
  11. Was the Microtrol the homebrew that used a massive PCB filling most of the back of the tx case? If so I built one from the book but can't honestly say that I had much luck with it, probably due to my home etched boards and cooking transistors. Both RM and RCM&E published systems iirc the RCM&E one started on 27MHz and a 35MHz update was published using revised coils and filters. Was it also sold as a kit under the name Viking?
  12. I was lucky as my print copy renewal date was 08/01/21, with a price of £44 for the year. I phoned the subscriptions hotline and Amanda very kindly cancelled my dd subscription and signed me up for the 2 year deal for £90 (print only) qualifying me for a complimentary £60 indoor helicopter. It is a lot to pay out in one go, but then how much will it save me against next year's inflation increase?
  13. Round here you'll do better handing out curry and a jab! Fish'n'chips is dead, it's chicken balti these days doncha know?
  14. Don't forget to set all rates to maximum and keep the throttle closed while calibrating it.
