  1. Thanks Murat. It was a new one to me. My dad had given me a box of covering and I stumbled across this stuff. On the roll it had “fibre film” written with pencil. No adhesive on the back, but very light. I used “Fast tack” PVA, only watered down like 10% I found the best. Over an open structure would be a challenge but this was actually quite relaxing to apply, leave it 2hrs, and then run over it with an iron.
  2. OK, so this was passed to me after being intercepted on its way to landfill. After failing to identify it,( it was clearly a kit, approx 41”), I had no real projects under way, so I had a bit of a head scratch and decided to see if I could make something of it, as it seemed a shame to bin and was actually a nice build. I determined it was closest to a clipped wing spit, so embarked on rounding the top deck, with depron sanded, and then 1/32nd sheet. Filled in the cut away for IC, and made hatches for electric motor and battery access. Rummaged in the garage for various bits I already had, and treated it to some decals. After a lengthy interview process Snoopy got the gig!, and prop on for flat field, prop off for slope.. What do you all reckon, does it resemble loosely a spit of a MK XVI variety? I think I will call it a “Spitish”... perhaps cartoon scale!, with a cartoon pilot! 😊
  3. We all owe a debt of gratitude to Peter and his generation of innovative and creative thinkers and doers. The modelling world will continue to benefit from his personal impact for many years to come. Thank you Sir
  4. On a square SLEC tank, I drill out the bottom right spigot (which is blanked off), put tube on, and a thin piece of tube over it to act as a clamp, or if enough room a very thin tie wrap to help secure, as I too have had tubes slipping off in the past. Then one at the top to the exhaust and blank off the other at the top. I use the bottom right to fill and drain successfully and no need to turn the model over. I only do this when as you, turning the model is a pain etc. As already mentioned the molding on the clunk line into the tank is dreadful, (they really do need to update the tooling as they seem to have got worse over time, so the tooling is slipping out of tolerance/worn), but check it and pressure check it submerged under some warm water... Works for me.
  5. OK, so for those of a nervous aesthetic disposition look away now, as it aint no stunner.. However, this design has been in my dad and my fleet for probably 40 years, as it is IMO one the best bang for buck, best flying, neutral well behaved models I have ever flown. It has taught people to fly, screwed around in pylon races, and done a B cert. The model is called a Scat Cat, and is a US Q500 design pylon racer. However, we discovered, with a few design mods, like enlarging the fin, adding a rudder, and making a light built up back end, it made a great low wing model for all occasions, powered by a decent 25-32 IC. Below is the latest incarnation, coming in at 2lbs 15 ¼ oz, and powered by an OS 25 FSR, it is perfect setup for all out fun.
  6. My 051 is a happy springer spaniel compared to the 09.. It has the after market US fine needle (forget the maker) in it and it is sweet!!!
  7. My contribution to this thread is not as such a dislike, or least favourite, but more of a genuine fear. Out of my extensive engine collection there is one engine which is both a Cox Tee Dee 09 and a portal to hell itself, providing a physical entity to which lucifer can manifest. Upon starting, the engine note, is one of a seething frustration of being strapped down, and I am convinced if it were to unshackle itself it would come for my throat. I dare not sell it, as it would surely track me down and reap revenge on me. If it were a dog it would be an XL bully, it should have a dedicated psychiatrist, it should come with a straight jacket in the box. My local priest regrettably refused to bless my tank of 25% nitro fuel, so I am stuck with it. To this day, I refuse to be left alone in a room with the 09.
  8. Morning all, little late this morning as I've been for a stroll down the beach, I chatted to a lifeguard who kept moaning about getting attacked by seagulls every day......... I think he had a huge chip on his shoulder
  9. Completely agree with Mr Harris. It surprises me how many members do not have "models for all occasions". Lets face it, the weather in the UK has always been unpredictable and variable, so I have all types of models to suit the occasion. Most members don't, and moan that they don't get many flights. When the ground is very wet, and grass long, and the middle of winter, I take electric models without an undercart etc. Alot have a "winter hack", but most have undercarts. They are not my favourite by any means, but it gets me out for a natter and coffee, and I get a flight in. Each and to their own.
  10. Mornin all, little early this morning as I wanted to see if my new book about poltergeists made the best sellers list.................apparently it's flying off the shelves
  11. The Saito is circa 3oz lighter, will give you an increased performance, but depends what you are after. If you need the weight up front and are happy with the performance of before then I'd carry on. If I wanted a little extra margin, I would go Saito no doubts. I have loads (and a few lasers) and they are super engines, and IMO are more straightforward to install, (less critical on carb and tank position, and less/smaller holes in the cowl!!)..
  12. IMO.. Folk should be briefed on wing loading, what it is and what impact it has on flight characteristics. Applies to foam, foam board, EPP, balsa, composite, fibreglass..all sizes etc
  13. Shame he didnt jump on a motorbike and tear off over the horizon afterwards.. would have been the icing on the cake!!.
  14. I just had phone call from a mate, he gave me the number for a phone in competition to win either £100 or 2 tickets to see an Elvis tribute act.....................I didn't know whether to press one for the money or two for the show.
  15. I would imagine a lot of these types of business' have in the last decade been classed as "cottage industry" or "lifestyle" business', run by retirees, or folk with a second income, as I'd imagine they just don't generate a living on their own. As Ron says, folk wont exactly queue up to sink investment, however moderate into something which takes time, and runs the risk of financial loss, as opposed to gain. Anyone taking on this type of venture, would be IMO doing it as a break even hobby for the love of it, and for something to do.. not to establish a profitable venture. Just the way it is. Someone might step forward, perhaps not. It would I guess be useful if the owners, could "moth ball" the assets into a "starter or blueprint", so that if in the future, someone wishes to explore the possibility, then what they need is "in a box, on file, on hard drive etc".. Could we imagine a vault at buckminster holding this type of legacy and assets of our hobby?... instead of the skip?.
  16. I remove carb and any O ring, plastic parts, and sometimes remove the head if it will come off. Stick it in an oven for 6-10mins, whip it out, stick an old prop on and tighten, and then gently try and rock it until it frees. Might take a couple of goes.. decent oven gloves a must, and try and do it when the Mrs is out!!. Works for me. Once it is moving, then the other methods here and oil help to really free it off.
  17. Like the rest of us, I am delighted for you. Keep trying to focus on what you CAN DO, as opposed to what you currently can't, and it is currently and not never. The list will grow in the positive direction. Thrilled for you
  18. Yesterday I was chatting to a mate who's volunteering at the Olympics, he collects the batons from the relay runners after the race, he's great at it................you've got to hand it to him......
  19. I have sometimes glued two sheets of sandpaper together and then cut out a "washer" to clamp up to between the hub and prop.. mostly on my YS engines. Has worked fine. 4 strokes can bang and throw a prop.. Just whip the rocker cover off and make sure the rockers havent jumped off the rods before trying again.
  20. Hey Jon, change your name, wear a disguise, leave your former life at Laser behind and focus on your hobby without the baggage which has amassed. We all know aeromodelling is a stress buster and shouldnt be stress generator.. what ever you decide I wish you well
  21. Yes a Norvel RC 0.49.. really good little engines, it is glow, not diesel. I use the "Big Mig 0.61 in my 1/2a mustang". The 0.61 uses a "button type" glow plug, I imagine the 0.49 is the same
  22. Thanks guys, but I can’t seem to find any info on the dogfight double. If you have a link I would be very grateful
  23. Hi folk, the old man has been handed this. 40” span, kinda cartoon mustang/spit. All solid, wing doesn’t detach, access via hatch with canopy on top..sort of a 25 size fun fighter but not.. will be pretty old.
  24. You clever clever devil... brilliant
