  1. Had this Flite test P38 out for its maiden flew straight from my hand launch no trim needed 57" span Race star 3536 900KV motors 3s 2200 battery gave 5 mins flight 3s 3000n gave 6 mins. flight. The field is a ten mins walk from my house, I have the farmers permission to fly there but no runway so hand launches only. I am going to change the props from 9x6 to 8x8 as the tufts of grass pulled one motor loose. It is now repaired and ready for the next fine day.
  2. I built a Gordon Whitehead Tiger Moth the plan called for a 20two stroke, I put an OS 25FSR in, it flew like a Pitts Special. I changed it to an OS 20 max and it flew like a Tiger Moth, much better than tearing round the sky like a scalded kitten.
  3. Hi Tim, sand the sides down till they match the top sheets so that it gradually blends in.
  4. I remember it in the APS plans book, it was an impressive model at it's original size. Looking good so far Ron.
  5. Hi Jonathan. while drawing this Paul came up with the photo. remember to take a little chamfer at the top to allow the full movement up and down on the aileron.
  6. I don't know about Pretty Polly but they have the markings of Big beautiful doll. Jonathan you really don't want all those nobbly bits on your ailerons.
  7. After the magnets the prop wont make a lot of difference if the esc is wired wrong. Don't worry Tim we have all been there.
  8. I once gave a pretty girl a lift in my car, she said she was a witch. i asked her to prove it so she gave me a kiss and I turned into a layby.
  9. As I said the Hurricane crashed first flight, it took off turned right and as I straightened it up it became uncontrollable I never found out why as it hit the concrete runway and it was written off. I suspect the radio may have been the cause the RX was damaged so it was hard to tell. I built the David Boddington one after that, it was about the same size. A free plan in one of the mags. that needed a lot of sorting out as the wing plan was wrong the ribs did not match the main spar. it flew ok but never great. I think it was the size 48" span a Hurricane needs to be 60" up wards to fly reasonably well as the rear gets proportionately lighter as the size increases depending on wood selection. John I agree with you on the modern world, the trouble is basic skills are not popular now, in our club there are only 5% builders the rest buy off the shelf ARTF.
  10. I built the Pilot FW190 powered by an OS 25 FSR it was a great flyer, well over 100 flights. After that I bought the Pilot Hurricane as it was on a clearance offer it crashed first flight. I built a Topflight Corsair and on take off it was fine but once in the air the I had to hold up elevator as it dived under power, after surgery on the tail plane it was no better, I changed the wing incidence with packing ,no better I even altered the engine trust and it still flew down on full power. It would fly reasonable on 1/2 throttle and landings were ok. I never got it sorted . As said in another thread the designer does not always get it right. I have built a few Complete a Pack models from plans but have always used the plans as a guide as they always turned out overweight models.
  11. I could do with trimming off some of the weight I have put on during lock down. I fly the Spitfire with a 4s 4000and and a 4250 800kv motor 13x8 2 blade prop and it has enough power to fly at scale speeds. I have a 9lb Hurricane with a 5050 580kv on 5s 4000 and it has loads of power , much more than the 91 FS that I first used.
  12. The plan calls for block balsa for the fillet, mine are a raid on the offcuts box, still plenty left to finish them.
  13. I ordered some FMS spares about three weeks ago paid by PayPal, got them within 4 days.
  14. Ever thought of manufacturing it Ron, at this rate Oracover will call in the receivers.
  15. I built a Brian Taylor P40 Warhawk with a 70fs and had to put lead in the tail. The original was for a 60 two stroke. nice flyer but needed more power.
  16. Sometimes deviating from the plan is a good thing as designers don't always get it right. some over the early plans for RC were over the top C.A.P. in particular where they called for the area from the LE to the undercarriage mounting to be filled with block balsa, The Brian Taylor Tempest I am currently building calls for the elevators and rudder to be made from two laminations of 3/8" balsa. So any way I can see of loosing weight without compromising the structure I will go for. Eric r.
  17. If you use Johns method why not drill 4 holes in from the sides to clamp the ply plates. Clamp the plates in place and drill through near the engine bolt holes, remove the plates and counter sink them then glue them and refit them with CSK M3 bolts and nuts, this will hold the ply together.
  18. Thanks Jonathan, I do have an advantage I am retired and live alone as my wife has passed on. And I get more enjoyment building than watching TV I can also mess up the dining room instead of facing a cold shed in the winter. I painted the cowl with black etch primer as the register lines were difficult to see on the clear resin moulding. At this point it weighs just on 4lb with the servos and tail feathers, although there is a lot of filling with block balsa or laminated balsa for the wing and tail fillets. The prototype weighed 9 1/2lb with a 61 2 stroke engine and 3/4lb of lead up front. I am aiming for 8lb total.
  19. Hi Danny, I did that with my B.Taylor Warhawk and in 15 years never had to remove it till the wings folded. As you see in the out of focus picture the wing tip is very thin so I tried to keep it as strong as possible. Cheers Eric.
  20. Hi Danny, I am sure the standard of your building will take an IC engine many models have been flown for years on this power. The behaviour of an IC engine is down to the operator, good installation, good tank position, in line filters, correct fuel, and once in and set up don't fiddle about with the settings, You will love the sound of the 4 stroke engine, the cleaning is worth the benefits of longer flight times and being able to fly all day without charging batteries. Eric.
  21. Folded will be fine for me Ron, it ends up being ironed out. Rolls are meant for machine dispensing.
  22. The fin is that of a Miles Magister, part 36 looks like a Magister elevator, the fuselage formers and wing tips also Magister. the Miles Hawk speed 6 has two piece wings Magister wings no centre section but the fin is different. Bowman's Magister had a 3 piece wing so it could be part of a Magister kit with the centre section missing which would put it up to the 85" span.
  23. These things are sent to try us, can anyone tell me why?
  24. I Know that feeling and still remember it.
