Phil Cooke
Spent a bit of time in the garage this afternoon although most of it was sanding with little to show for it. I did get the rear top 3/8th sheet fitted to both fuselages, so that's the basic assembly finished now pending the spine and canopy, the fitting of the fin, tails and air intakes. The top rear sheeting went on much simpler than the bottom as expected - the former shoulders are all perfectly co-planar in this region. The sheeting still needs sanding to length in the first photo having been rough sanded to the top and side profiles. Will look a lot more Tornado like once all the rads are sanded in... I need to continue to build rear of F8 to fit the 2 engine exhausts at the right point too... the plan is not too specific in this respect, but I have some ideas which we'll no doubt cover later. Final shot shows the fin and air intake pinned into position for the camera... getting there slowly but still a lot to do, and only 9 weeks now until the first PSS event of the year!! Matt Jones
Lovely Phil, that assembled shot looks the nuts!
Mark Kettle 1
Very inspiring that photo Phil.
Phil Cooke
with less than 9 weeks to go to the Fly-In and with 2 airframes at this stage, inspiration and motivation is just what I need Mark! Adding another coat of paint here to the pilots before work...
Steve Houghton
Beautiful craftsmanship as usual, Phil. I can almost smell the balsa from here. I'm not getting the same whiffs from my latest Zlin build, just some noxious foam fumes so far!
Andy Blackburn
That does look good Phil. I hadn't realised it was only 9 weeks...
Mark Kettle 1
counting from tomorrow.......60 days and 10 hours ( less your drive time to the Orme ! )
Phil Cooke
Thanks Mark... becoming more conscious of time (!) hence last night a very late nights modelling - painting 4 pilots and ejector seats until silly hours. Prior to that I did get some work done on the fins and the exhaust arrangement. Rez has very kindly modelled the complex exhaust nozzles and actuator in CAD for 3D printing, more on that soon. To fit these accurately onto the model I need to build the fuselage rear from F8, forming effectively the thrust reverser bucket doors top and bottom - there's a big change in section and this will be created in 1/16th balsa - hence a coupe of guide formers are needed to aid the sheeting to conform to the shape required - and to mount the printed parts to. I found last night I needed to supply Rez a slight scale factor to get the width of his CAD model to match my fuselage build on width - 138.0mm between the elliptical fairings at the correct axial station. Still need to hollow out this former so when viewed from the rear the exhausts appear to have some depth to them, and mounted 13mm upstream of the rearmost part of the fus as shown the exhausts are positioned correctly front to back. Andy Meade
Wait...what?! Oh right now Rez has offered, it's all systems go for 3D printing eh? What happened to modelling them out of balsa as it doesn't feel right getting them printed? Hehehe I'd be panicking too by now!
Phil Cooke
hehehe thanks Andy. I'll take that one on the chin as I DID say I would make them from balsa, you are right. Rez was really keen to model them and presented me with a finished job - it would have been awfully selfish of me not to employ them now, wouldn't it. Andy Meade
Don't blame you Phil, I think it's great with the advent of cheaper 3D printers - just buying one myself at the moment! I fancied getting the ejector seat for the A10 printed, but it was quite expensive, so I have designed and will print my own. Sorry for the abuse! Fly_Boy_Rez
If I may.... Yep, I fancied having a go at modelling the tailpipes and being quite pleased with the results have offered them to Phil. If anyone wants the file to print their own then let me know and I'll send you the .STL files... I'll even scale them to suit your dimensions. Phil Cooke
Hey Rez, thanks for posting the pics of the modelled nozzles - these are going to finish the back end off very convincingly indeed I can't wait to get them fitted and painted up! Matt Jones
Don't they come pre-painted Then?
Andy Conway
Hey Rez, I would like a copy please of this file, would this be ready for 3D printing? Don't know much about this printing method would be ideal for my EDF version at the sizes shown. Cheers Andy C
Peter Garsden
I also found it interesting. Don't have such a printer. Would be interested in buying the part printed? Any offers?
Fly_Boy_Rez
Andy C, I've messaged you regarding the files. Peter G, Wish I could but I'm struggling to get Phil's done. Rez
Fly_Boy_Rez
FWIW, I'm making enquiries to see how much it would cost to get them printed. As soon as I have a cost I will get back to you and we can discuss if anyone is interested in getting them printed through this source. Peter Garsden
I was looking at the leaflet that Real Model Pilots sent. They do 3D printing of accessories such as this. Maybe if they know a few of us are interested?
Andy Meade
Yup RMP can print your STL's. I'd do it, but my printer isn't here yet
Fly_Boy_Rez
That's who I've emailed. As soon as I hear anything I'll let you know. Alternatively if any of you know the RMP guys personally then by all means get in touch with them independantly.
Fly_Boy_Rez
RMP have quoted £15+P&P for a complete set of nozzles and TR mech for one Tornado. If this is of interest then reply to this effect and I will upload the files to RMP and you can order from them direct.
Peter Garsden
Sounds good Rez. Excellent. I will contact them.
Fly_Boy_Rez
Right, the files have been sent to Sean at RealModelPilots. Feel free to order direct through RMP. Cheers! Rez
Phil Cooke
Rez, many thanks for releasing the model files you've so skilfully created - I'm sure other Tonka builders will take advantage of the work you've done today with Sean at RealModelPilots and treat themselves a set of printed nozzles. They are going to look great!! I've built up the rear fuselage now to the former axially positioned for the nozzles. Before the curvaceous 3/32" sheeting could be added I created a little step on the rear of F8 using 1/8th balsa, like this on the top... and like this on the underside... These will act as a ridge onto which the sheeting could be glued.
