George Cole RIP

Very sad news of George Coles passing. Its just my opinion but his portrayal of Arthur in Minder is one of the greats in TV. I can sit and watch the repeats with the same grin on my face after nearly 35 years ! The on screen rapport between Cole and Waterman was superb and I was pleased that the two had been together just this week before George Coles death. Must of course mention his St Trinians Flash Harry as well. RIP.

I remember him in 'Life of Bliss' on the radio long before TV and Arfer Daley.

Me too. In fact I never saw 'Minder' but I remember him as the spiv or wide boy in the St Trinian's films which, as a fan of cartoonist Ronald Searle, who invented them, I enjoyed greatly.

I think he was 90 which isn't a bad innings so we can't be too sad but should celebrate his life.

You never saw Minder Geoff? You missed an absolute gem Geoff, you'd enjoy it! Magical humour.....

Well, until recently I didn't have the means. We've been married 48 years and have never owned a TV. I was brought up living over the shop of the family radio/TV business and used to repair TVs etc. When we married I knew the only way I was ever going to get anything done was to remove the temptation of TV. Now I do watch programmes on iPlayer and I bought a TV licence even though we don't have one (of course now I'm old enough for it to be free) so I could watch cycling live on Eurosport on my workshop PC.

In reply to Tony. I have never been interested in pop music but Cilla Black gave millions a lot of pleasure over many years and she seemd to be very genuine and warm person. George Cole was the same. When people of influence die it's hardly surprising that it's a news item and that their lives are reviewed. Of course it can be a bit extreme as when Diana was killed but usually it's not too bad. Though the number of 'celebrities' I've never heard of seems to be increasing as I age

And, in answer to your question. Do they care that you don't?

Not looking for an argument here mate, just simply evening the debate a bit........

Percy, I don't care if they if they don't care that I don't care. What had the person in question done for the good of the people?

I used to watch " Minder" ,it was entertaining but I'm not sure exactly what message it was trying to convey. Perhaps, like "Fools and horses" it presented the lovable rogues. The outlaws on the edge of what was acceptable. Perhaps, maybe, encouraging people to live on the borders of acceptable common law behaviour, or perhaps not.

Of course there were those who were not "lovable rogues" , and we don't need to mention names.

Anyway, the point was, do I care about an actor, no I don't. I don't care about any "star" .

Why should we be so concerened about someone who pretended to be someone else and made a very good living from that pretence?

So why bother replying to the thread? You didn't have to read it, you chose to do so.

As for any message that was supposed to be presented, it was something called comedic entertainment, something George Cole did very well.

I never watched "Minder", but George Cole was certainly good as Flash in the St Trinian's films, and superb as the repulsive MP and schemer in "Blott on the Landscape". Who can forget the scene where he is chased around his own grounds by the wild animals placed there by his wife?

I'd forgotten that one, about time it was shown again.
