Paul Marsh
It's not the Rolls-Royce Trent engine this time, but a General Electric/Pratt and Whitney engine, but same non-contained failure as the Qantas Flight 32. Just about to add a pic. Looks like the whole forward fan/compressor has completely sheared off... Josip Vrandecic -Mes
G/e Paul ,this is horrible to me ... I remember some of NTSB investigations, but never destroyed such engines during the flight. Thanks for your time. Geoff S
Before I retired in 1995 I used to be involved in fan blade containment tests at Rolls-Royce but I don't remember any tests involving a shaft failure like that seems to be. Looks like the whole fan casing/containment structure has gone, too. Geoff
Erfolg
Although the damage to the engine is pretty significant, there does also appear to be a fair degree of luck. Neither the fan or casing appears to have done any damage to the airframe on their exit. The other aspect is that no reports of any ground damage appears to be reported. Paul C.
The captain said it was a 'small engine explosion ' 😱 master of the understatement I think !!

Edited By Paul Marsh on 01/10/2017 20:36:05 QF32 suffered a turbine disc failure on the Trent 900, this was a fan / shaft failure; agree that both were uncontained failures though. Cuban8
I think I'm right in saying that the A380 has a TV camera mounted high up on the fin looking forward, so perhaps there's video of the failure? Given the quantity and mass of high energy debris that must have been ejected from the site of failure, it's incredible that far more serious damage didn't occur to the airframe and thankfully, no passengers or crew were hurt. Will be interesting to find out what the investigating authorities' findings eventually turn up - usually a string of reasons coming together resulting in trouble.
