Joe Newrick
Hi I need some 1/8" and 1/4" aircraft grade plywood for my latest build. I cant seem to find anywhere that sells it? I have lots of lite ply but cant find aircraft grade. Does anyone know of somewhere I can order this only, or an alternative term for my "google-ing" Thanks! Shaun Walsh
Sizes are large and so delivery expensive
Don Fry
SLEC, INWOOD, BALSA BUTCHER. Aircraft grade is is nothing special. I assume it a model.
Martin Dilly 1
You could try contacting the Light Aircraft Association. Some home builders might have small amounts they could sell you.
Denis Watkins
Although Birch Ply appears in 8' x 4' foot sheets The thickness is usually Metric these days And 3mm and 6mm Birch Ply are very common in model construction And are available in smaller sheets from Dons listed suppliers
Levanter
Joe Welcome to the forum. What is your latest build? There are lots of different types of ply and what you are searching for as "aircraft grade" may well be over the top. Levanter
Joe Newrick
Thanks for the responses. It is a 1/4 scale L19 bird dog. I am using the Vailly plans but cutting the kit myself so trying to find some of the wood is difficult. its 108" span and target auw of around 10kg. Says to use "3mm" (1/8th) lite ply, then the same thickness in aircraft grade ply and laminate the 2 ribs together. Also says to use 1/4" aircraft grade ply for the engine firewall and sections on the fuse where the wings join. Should I just use birch ply in place of aircraft grade? Its far easier to get hold of in smaller quantities.
Denis Watkins
Yes Joe Birch Ply, used in models for a lifetime 3mm and 6mm in your case
Levanter
Like Dennis says. My local model shop only stocks birch ply up to 3mm so if I want something thicker I laminate 2 or more pieces together. Post some photos of your build. It will be interesting. Levanter

Peter Miller
As has been said. SLEC have a large range of sizes in Liteply and Birch ply. I would expect birch ply to be fine. Aircraft grade will be specially made to a specification and will cost a small fortune. AGS (Aircraft General Sapres) nuts and bolts cost a fortune compared to normal high tensile bolts bought from a shop
Joe Newrick
Thanks for all the help, think I will just give birch ply a a try. Will put an order in with SLEC.
Martin McIntosh
I beg to differ on the thicknesses. Lite ply is metric, birch is still generally imperial, although I once did a little repair work on a full size Stampe and the LE sheeting was 1mm aircraft grade birch. No different to the stuff we use except for the inflated price.
