Hi All,

I was recently in need of a 1/4 scale Piper J3 cowling and was surprised at how hard it was to find one.

I googled Carbon Copy and one of the responses was a thread on this forum where some prospective customers has encountered difficulties in contacting the firm and obtaining their goods.

It came up in conversation at the field and Carbon Copy was mentioned as a possible source. That person had recently bought something from them - no problem.

I rang them on Monday or Tuesday of this week and took delivery of a very nice quality cowl today. Very happy.

Aftermarket accessories are hard to find in the shrinking model trade so I pleased to confirm that CC are still in business and producing decent products.

I have no connection to the firm in any way.

The CLA Gamefair went that way. Twenty years ago its core was Fisherman’s and Gunmakers Rows and they were rammed. There were top end retailers and makers, high volume retailers, bargain and end of season stalls; the peripheral non-core vendors of rugs, wine patio sets etc were indeed at the peripheries (collectively referred to as the hand-knitted donkeys) and it was always a great place to spend cash.

Inexorably, possibly partly due to online throat-cutting, this core began to miss fairs. One is well known to me and he says that the margins are sufficiently tight and the stall rents sufficiently high to make most fairs a waste of time and money. At the time it seemed to me that the CLA were missing a trick by not offering a two tier rent structure. My contact agreed.

Anyway, it folded three odd years ago having lost money for the previous three years. It’s been floated again by another organisation but I dont know anyone from my fishing and shooting pals who’s been back.

When I started flying again three years ago we went to Weston and Elvington and the former in particular was a great opportunity for retail therapy. It would be a great shame if these shows go the same way. Long rows of big tents stuffed with boxes and bits are surely still a draw, especially in a climate where LMSs are in decline and some modellers don’t have realistic access to one (which is why I support mine wherever practical). Nor do I treat them as mutually exclusive as the show purchases tend to be either bargains or specialist.

show organisers, make your pitch prices sensible for genuine modelling suppliers.

Unfortunately show organisers are not modellers but shoot themselves in the foot by being greedy - ultimately killing the shows altogether, i.e. Sandown.

The first year at Headcorn was great, but has gone downhill since.....

Hmmm! Just got my mobile phone bill and there is a £3.12 charge for a 5 minute call to an 08456 number, A bit of a hidden charge there by Carbon Copy which does them no credit. sad

I found THIS about 08456 numbers.....doesn’t ease your pain over the cost though

If you dialled an 08 number from a mobile and got surprised at the inflated charge... well, that's on you then.

With regards to Carbon Copy, I had a nice chat with Stu and Lee around three weeks ago.

For reference, Stu set up Carbon Copy originally and (with Lee) is now handling things again as Chris (who was running things for the last couple of years) has moved on.

At the time we were speaking, they were in the process of moulding a backlog of parts, re-organising the unit, and getting their website updated - See: www.carboncopyuk.com

Please note, this is all first-hand information and not gossip overheard and passed-on by a mate's next-door neighbour's girlfriend's grand-dad's cat.

p.s. Disappointing to read about the charge relating to the 0845 call, not least because I thought everyone was up-to-speed regarding 0845 numbers
