A very tidy and competent build, Toto - the model will be a good one and will be well suited to a bit of tuning to get more performance as you gain experience and try more advanced stuff in the fullness of time. It's a clean design and well suited to all the basic aeros with a few tweaks here and there. It's very difficult to reduce the weight of a model conversion from glow to electric unless you do something to lighten the tail (not always a wise move). Even if the motor/esc/battery combination is lighter than the glow engine and its ancillary equipment the CoG still needs to be in the same place so it may need ballast. Keith Evans 3 Posted November 6, 2023 Share Posted November 6, 2023 Hi re converting from glow to electric,----- taking out the engine ,tank ,RX battery ,the throttle servo etc. will probably make it lighter and yes you will need to add a fair bit of ballast to balance it correctly . The only place at present in the electric version is around the motor mount unless further mods are made to bring the ballast forward as the ABS cowl will not support the weight . All this will add more weight . Just to re state ..the 5.5 lbs . weight quoted on the plan will most likely to come out as 6.5 lbs . in the I.C. version . I've been way laid on resolving some issues on the powering of my Domino lately which has meant my time has been a bit thin on the ground here. however ..... the Domino issue will keep me airborne so it had to take precedence ..... however .... now it seems to be resolved .... I think ..... I hope to be progressing the SKY 40 build again as of tomorrow night. toto Posted November 8, 2023 Author Share Posted November 8, 2023 So ..... back to where I left off and first .... the installation of the second 4mm stock that runs full length along the main wing central spar .... which was actually done last night as I had a free minute ..... Now they need trimming to length ..... and ..... to give ..... and ....... just a little bit more sanding to be done on the last one there. toto Posted November 8, 2023 Author Share Posted November 8, 2023 and the last for tonight ...... here is where we are applying the balsa ( pre cut in kit ) Glued the wing spars and place the balsa in place ( not cut to size yet ).... Then the last piece that takes us to the bottom of the trailing edge ..... and there it is .... and once dried it will be cut to its final fitted size .... again a slight bit trimming to be done once dried. and that is it until tomorrow from the shed. cheers toto 2 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I started by taking the tape off from the previous nights balsa covering which has now dried .... and .... and cut to size ..... now ..... things are going well so its time to cut and glue the underside of the wing leading edge balsa sheeting .... which was done ...... but ..... disaster looms ...... I glued and pinned the balsa in place ..... and came up with a brain wave ..... why not employ a few clamps .... idiot ....... not thinking that there was nothing beneath the balsa where I applied the clamp ..... still .... a little fill and sand exercise .... but I'm not happy none the less. all taped up to hold in place until tomorrow .... I applied some alphabetic glue over it last night in an attempt to get it down into the crack and add a little strength . Nigel R Posted November 10, 2023 Share Posted November 10, 2023 I don't know much about alphabetic glue I'm afraid... Peter's suggestion is probably the best route forward for you. Should be plenty strong enough. Thin, properly thin, cyano, can make balsa a lot stiffer and cracks like this are made almost as strong as the original wood, if you're careful about the repair. The trick is making sure you've pulled the wood out so that it is all back in exactly the same place again. In the past I've poked a hole in the sheet and used a bent piece of wire to pull sheeting back out to flat, before using the thinnest cyano to soak into the crack 2 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Not a huge amount but these parts need to dry and its alphabetic glue I'm using. The plan is to attack the Tiger 60 with the Watt meter during drying time to keep myself moving ..... and do a final charge of jymtransmitter for tomorrow's flying activities ....... full steam ahead. toto Posted November 10, 2023 Author Share Posted November 10, 2023 So .... limited activities on the Sky 40 tonight ..... started off taking off the tape from last night which was holding the long balsa wing covering in place ..... and .... tried the wing bracing in place ..... and you will see that I glued the webbing pieces W15 and W16 in place ........ eventually when the wing bracing goes in permanently ..... these interfaces will be smothered in glue to hold the wing braces in place. then ....... I glued the servo tray W18 and the doubler W17 and after the glue had gone off a bit ..... installed it into the wing on wing ribs W3 and W4. then the remaining two pieces of of balsa covering which takes the covering down to the trailing edge between the first two wing ribs .... which gives us ..... next will be to cut of the balsa feet from the individual wing spars and fit and glue the capping strips on the wing spars ..... but that's not for tonight. Piers Bowlan Posted November 11, 2023 Share Posted November 11, 2023 I think you are getting your spars and ribs mixed up Toto, which makes reading this a little confusing at times. Incidentally, for (rib) cap strips I use cyano. A dot of glue one end, make sure it is positioned correctly, then hold in position while you glue the other end. Thin cyano wicks along the length of the strip. You don’t need the wing pined to the board and a lot quicker than pinning and using aliphatic. Just don’t glue your fingers to the wing! toto Posted November 15, 2023 Author Share Posted November 15, 2023 Jesus ..... more apologies ..... this is beginning to be a habit ( and no .... I'm not a nun ) things are going mad at the moment with this work thing commitment so I've been a bit stretched. Domestics ( mother in laws home survey ) and a couple of other things have been driving me nuts. However ...... I am hoping to make the most of tomorrow night to get these wing rib capping strips and leading and trailing edges done. Next week is a total right off as a one night stay in Belgium has turned into a week in the Netherlands. So next weeks activities will be restricted to the weekend. There will hopefully be a few activities on the go though as I will be progressing the Sky 40 and also kitting out the Tiger 3 .60 with my newly acquired motor which arrives tomorrow.
