I'm always very impressed by someone who knows how to effectively use effect instead of affect. Hat tip.

how do people finish their veneer? I'm putting together a fun fighter at the moment and wondering whether to apply a thinned down coat of lightweight filler just to smooth everything over before I apply the film. Or whether to use sanding sealer of some description just to lift the grain before a final sanding?
-
Down to one actually. One of my friends wanted one of them so I did him a favour. Fiver plus postage for the other one. I realise I should probably stick it on a For Sale group though I wasn't specifically putting it up for sale!

I have two Taylor made plugs without idle bar which are unlikely to be used by me. Any takers? Think they're long reach, can't tell which plug they are though.

I sincerely hope so. We're all seeing the effects of climate change and it's accelerating. Being petulant with FOMO about us leading the way because others might not do as we do is NOT leading the way! I'm wholeheartedly convinced that climate change is really accelerating and believe the facts and figures I see to back that up. When I got a job in my local city, I used to cycle the 11 miles each way to the office, 5 days a week. I saved both time and huge amounts of money, I gained health benefits mentally and physically and I polluted ABSOLUTELY ZERO, let alone net zero. I had absolutely no fear of missing out on the big swanky leather trimmed gas guzzler, I beat _everyone_ who used a bus the same distance and cars too once they'd had to figure out where to park in the city centre. If some forward thinking governments could increase uptake of cycling and reward that somehow we'd have a healthier happier nation _and_ environment.

This thread started out as promising to discuss low carbon homes and turned into bashing leccy cars. Can we split the thread in two?

Looking again, it appears the comment about disdain is also tongue in cheek and refers to another thread on the forum, I probably haven't been keeping up to date enough on this forum and didn't spot it was taking the mickey. Again, too tired when I started reading it and didn't know enough about the subject!

It wasn't Richard's comment I found irksome at all. Someone else on the first couple of pages. Just found it to be particularly unnecessary!

I have tried to read this thread but always only seem to get a chance when it's gone 10pm and I'm winding down and my attention span is waning. Forgive me if I've missed vital parts of the thread. I found an early comment on here particularly irksome that anyone who doesn't finish a scale model in a scale finish to be held in disdain. Scale modellers will scale, not all modellers want to be rivet counters. If we can introduce more builders, why does it matter at all how they finish their kits? I spent best part of a year building a WR Spitfire and I love it. I finished with a kinda scale finish that wasn't accurate to any particular exact spit, but I was happy with it. If I were to build it again, I'd do stuff differently and make it _more_ scale, but that's missing the point. The point is that we should encourage the building bug to get under the skin, and let people finish however they want to. I see Darren's fun fighters get finished in almost everything APART from scale finishes and I LOVE them. Do we see Darren telling people they can only build his models if they make their best efforts to create an authentic scale finish? No! I know Richard is supportive of everyone and I also know whilst he's a master of making stuff look scale, but he's not going to throw his toys out of the pram no matter what finish we choose. With Warbird Replicas I've got an LA7, a Hurricane, a P51 and another Spitfire to build and I _will_ make them all scale I think, but they're BIG projects to me, and I like to mix it up a little. So right now, I'm building a Cambria Funfighters Kawasaki Hein. And guess what? I'm covering it in bright orange and dark blue film which will be not the least bit scale. So there. Richard, whatever kits you produce I will buy more, though I've got a few to get through before my build queue is empty... Just let people finish them however they choose!

Ooh, I picked up a kit from a former club member who has sadly passed away. I aim to get on and build it at some point in the next year or so, will think about using some poly silk or similar:

Yeah but as a laser aficionado I don't think anyone is going to worry about thread derailment. That looks so sore, sorry to see, you must be in awful pain. You have my sympathy and I really hope your skin heals well in time. Burns are the worst, I really feel for you.

Order of applying covering film
David Hazell 1 replied to Tim Kearsley's topic in Building from Traditional Kits and Plans
and if you have to cover in stages, back first, up to front last... Keeps the overlap so that the wind/fuel has less chance of getting under the seam... -

Laser 40 special edition, incoming?! -
Got mine in the post (but ordered via facebook!) they look like they will be mega useful!

Cambria, not CambriaN... Different planes. Cambria are very much still in business. Their website is https://funfighters.co.uk/ They've just launched a new model - a BEDE5. Other than that they have: FW190, Spitfire, Mustang, Hein, ME109. All work with .25-.32 engines or leccy equivalent. Oh and Zero (for a .40 - .46). Cambria group on fb is here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1460474474245610

Aliphatic Glue
David Hazell 1 replied to Nigel Heather's topic in Building from Traditional Kits and Plans
I consider SuperPhatic to be completely different to aliphatic resin. I use both. I love SuperPhatic for joints where wicking helps - i.e. wing ribs to spars. I use aliphatic resin for anything where I'm joining long lengths to other long lengths. Like say adding triangle to the bottom of a fuse side etc. -
I covered my A10 in supermatt 42 micron (I asked for 38, but ended up with 42, ho hum). I _expected_ the paint to adhere really well, but it really doesn't, it's flaking off all over the place. I use a cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol to rub over the whole model to ensure dust free, but it wasn't enough. Expect to have to properly key any lam film no matter what the finish if you don't want paint flaking off. I will make sure I go the extra step next time!

I did a build log of my A10 build on google photos: https://photos.app.goo.gl/vECz78aDhvmBczh68

Brilliant! Let me know how the maiden goes! I too had to perform extensive surgery on the back end to get the servo moving freely, but luckily it didn't end up with a burnt out servo. Having a rudder definitely helps me though as mine is a tail dragger and I can get it pointing the right way whilst gaining enough speed for take off. I will hope to fly it again this weekend, weather permitting.

Sounds a whole lot nicer too...

It sounds absolutely EPIC. Out of interest, what's the power like compared to the 2 stroke petrol engine you had in it?
-
I tried to get mine to rotate off a grass strip the other day. Mulch on strip not good for edf! The mulch clogged a fan and snapped the central mounting screw on one of the fans! I think I had it screwed down a bit too tight which probably weakened it. I've replaced the m2 screw with an m2 allen (all I had). I can't realistically balance the cone and fan now (access issues!), so it might be waiting to shake the plane to pieces. Waiting for less wind before I try again!

VID_20230415_173026.mp4 Did a quick maiden - worked a treat! I didn't have the guts to fly it myself, I got my mate Toby to do it as he's an awesome pilot. I didn't get the whole flight unfortunately.
