  1. The news has been in prose for as long as I can remember...
  2. Superb! Loads of character - makes you want to throw a stick for it! (Fetch!!)
  3. I rearranged my elevator linkage to pull for up: It's always pulled out (so far...)  A side benefit is that this arrangement helps to stiffen and support the rod. Edited By Mike T on 09/05/2017 18:09:43
  4. I fancied this when it came out and even found a pair of foam wings which (suitably modified) would save me a wing build. But for whatever reason, the project got put to one side. A few months back I decided I needed a 'BIBOC' soarer and that this would fit the bill, but despite searching high and low, I could not find the plan. I tried Outerzone in vain, but googling it turned up an ebayer who was advertising the mag, complete with plan for less than a fiver posted! When the mag arrived, I took the plan out and retrieved the foam wing from storage. I'd packed the panels carefully, and safely folded in between them was my original plan...
  5. Put simply, Coverite is pretty much the same as Solartex. I used it donkeys years ago on some glider wings. It 'performed' just like Solartex...
  6. It depends on how big the spinner is, but even well tightened up that's going to be a bit wobbly, I think. If you set this arrangement up so that it projects from the left hand side of your vice, then you can use your left hand (assuming you file with your right) to steady the open end of the spinner. Vicky verky for southpaws...
  7. Have you tried asking JE if their spares for the 40-sized ASPs and SCs will fit? They often do.
  8. I dust my files with talcum powder. Keeps them clog free and smelling nice!
  9. Posted by Stephen Jones on 14/04/2017 14:17:21: But what if i mix the Southerner 60 into the mix. That nice curvy body, Fin and that nice elliptical tail plane. Oh I see! It's a scientific exercise. You are setting out to challenge the orthodox view that it is not possible to polish a fecal deposit.   PS - love Max's graphics!   Edited By Mike T on 14/04/2017 18:32:23
  10. All the guys we've had join our Club in the last few years have started out with ARTF foamies. Three of those are now building all sorts of stuff, from indoor flyers using the electrics from the Bind'n fly kit, all the way up to 3M span PSS Learjets. If you decide the hobby is for you, it seems some people do tire of the sameness of ARTFs and want something more personal. The key is that foam got them flying successfully, so they have the confidence to invest in their own constructions with the promise of (more or less) guaranteed success.
  11. A word of caution re the 'budget' or 'no-name' ESC's: If you buy (say) a 40A Jeti or Hacker ESC, then you can pull 40A through it all day. Cheaper ESCs may not be as bullet-proof. Whether it be Hobbywing (my personal choice), Plush or whatever, I'd always 'up-spec' (say to 50/60A) to compensate for overoptimistic marketing...
  12. Have you noticed how gravity starts to work horizontally as you get older? Many's the time I've put something down firmly on the bench, only for it to roll insistently to the edge and fall off!
  13. ... and it's a damn sight easier to become a good pilot with weather and facilities like that!
  14. Posted by MaL on 31/03/2017 22:44:46: Ask three modellers the best way of doing something and this is the result....... cross drill all hinges out to 3mm and fit a High tensile bolt and two locknuts.....job done If possible I always use a full-length piano hinge on ailerons (but remember to get permission from the piano-owner first...). On rudder, I usually use those hinges from restaurant kitchen doors - swing both ways (ooh, err, missus) and are self centreing.
  15. Posted by Tom Sharp 2 on 27/03/2017 00:50:32: Using metal pins is not on. If they come out and end up in a cows stomach, farmer will not be pleased. Taking all things in to consideration, the likelihood of that happening (much less having any adverse effects) is vanishingly small!
  16. Hi all, Several years ago I was recommended (and bought) the UNI-T UT203 clamp meter. A friend now wants one - is there a more up to date recommendation, or is the UT203 still the best spec/value?
  17. Superb! I really like the tank - I'm going to make one up for the test stand (that's all the running time my diesels get these days!) (FWIW, I would have closed-looped the elevator as well. The wires are practically weightless and you get to put the servo right up front - weight (OK I know it's not much) where it's needed with short nosed vintage types. If balance is a problem, it's an option...)
  18. Send it to the "You've Been Framed" show
  19. You need to be careful with fuzzy hinges - I've had the fuzzy bit come detached from the core. Check before installing to see if the fuzzy layer can be pulled away. If so - don't use!! I prefer ordinary mylar strip, aggressively roughened (as opposed to 'lightly abraded'. I've also seen mylar hinges shear on the hingeline - so perfectly you swear they'd been cut with a scalpel. Mylar hinges: user discretion advised...  (Cue raft of 'I've never had a problem' posts... ) Edit: to answer the original question , put your anchor through the hinge behind the 5mm fin post, so that it bears up against it, as already advised. 20. As I read it, the problem is still being worked on by FrSky and the latest updates don't necessarily guarantee fault-free operation if the rx's front end is blatted by spurious RF. I speak as an enthusiastic ab initio FrSky user (got my gear from Giant Cod!!) who last year suffered a string of failures I could not isolate. I thought I had resolved it by buying a new module for my tx. The tx and the old module were given a clean bill of health by Mike Ridley.   Now I'm left wondering whether it was the rx's all along... 21. Posted by Keith Lomax on 22/03/2017 12:03:41: There will be a daily usage charge as well. The idea is that the centre income at least covers operational running costs so that the wider membership is not subsiding those who happen to live close enough to make more use of it. Will the daily usage charge (and the season ticket, for that matter) be set at a premium? It seems reasonable to me, given the anticipated quality of the facilities and for those who happen to live close enough to make more use of it, it will properly price the 'windfall' that has fallen in their laps...
  22. Per stu knowles, plus if the object is to have the underside covering not sticking to the spar, then make the 1/2 ribs undersize and put 1/16 cap strips underneath. Stronger all round!
  23. I know what would happen if I did that!! (but I'd have to sew them back on first...)
  24. Not a classic haiku Denis, but impressive nevertheless
