Alan B
There is another one I got the other day. I was browsing some informatiom and all of a sudden there was lots of flashing downloading stuff and a flashing sign " your computer is under attack from a virus" warning. It also threw up the "My Computer" (An internet copy) showing what files were being corrupted. It also throws up a "Click here" to download anti virus software requiring your payment details of course! Its a scam. If this ever happens to you then dont panic. Then just close all windows and carry on browsing your normal stuff. Al

001
I had an interesting one about a box of diamonds buried in the Sahara and would I like to fund an expedition! There was also the dead Prince and a chest of gold hidden in a cave! On the other hand, about a year ago I advertised a cheap and nasty 35mm camera lens on eBay. 'UK bidders only' I thought I would get about £20 -£30 for it. The bidding went up and up until it sold at £87, then I had a very nice email from a man in Malaysia. Thinking the worst, I pointed out that I wasn't accepting foreign buyers. He then put £117 into my PayPal account and asked me to post it, I was very suspicious, but I did. It cost me £12.50 to post. I kept my eye on the payment details for several weeks afterwards, but it was a good transaction, So it's not all bad. I would not risk £1,000 on one of the unsolicited emails, though, even if I had it.

James40
I hope it's held securely, a similar thing happened to me two years ago, a web site holding my info including bank details was hacked, the result was an empty bank account plus a large bill for going £1500 over my overdraft facility ! I only knew about it when I tried to withdraw some money on the 3rd of the month and my card was blocked! These guys send out spiders looking for websites with email addresses, you can protect against it.

James40
There's no need to go to those lengths but forums and websites can stop these intrusions. These scammers send out spiders that look for particular info, email addresses, addresses and phone numbers, they will search through this web site in a few seconds and gather all the info they need. The mainframe for this forum or the software creating it should see this happening and cut it off or block access, it isn't cutting edge technology, it's what every anti malware, anti virus software package has these days. I'm just surprised after a few people on this forum have been targeted that it hasn't rung any alarm bells?!
Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator
Hi James, My personal understanding of the situation (not speaking officially for myhobbystore you understand!) is that as far as your records, as held by myhobbystore as part of this foum, are concerned they are as secure as is reasonably possible. Meaning that standard commercial levels of security are in place as they would be on any other site of this nature. BUT....if you put your email address in plain text in a classified ad - then that is not protected. It can't be because as an advert by definition anyone, including guests on the site, have to be able to read it. That is why these spam mails are only going to folks who have placed ads - for example I have never placed an ad on here and have never recieved spam email which I have any reason to believe originated from my contact details on this site. So, I think the moral of the tale is: if you are very concerned about this then only allow folks to contact you about an ad via a PM. Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator
Just a suggestion folks. When I do place my email address in the public domain - as in a classified ad for example - I don't use my main address that I use everyday. Instead I have a couple of Hotmail or Gmail accounts I keep for specifically this purpose. If they get spammed or scammed it doesn't really matter. TBH I get quite a lot of these emails anyway because my email address appears on my work website and in several other places around the net. They are just phishing mails and there really isn't the need to be too nervous about them. It doesn't mean these people have any personal details about you - all it does mean is that they have your email address. The phishing emails are an attempt to get the rest of your details by enticing you to provide them. Provided you don't "fall" for it there is no real danger. Its inconvienent and I can see that if your not used to receiving them they might be a bit disconcerting at first. But the reality is it doesn't mean your ID details are in anyway at risk - unless you respond and give them your details! Those of us with our email addresses all over the web just get used to the odd scam/viagra/russian wedding proposal etc. email and just delete them. Your email system can also help as many now have quite sophisticated spam filters now. BEB
