Gary Turner
I have an idea too if there any left? I got a small 2s power system and a carbon spar from an old foamie power glider, I reckon some sort of Slo-Stick thingy would be funky! Mark Stringer
mmm - can see a 3D shocky type working well from that - maybe use two to maintain the tail, fin and fuselage all out of the same material - could be fun!
David Ashby - Moderator
Would anyone like me to bring some up to Greenacres this weekend? Keith, it's best you check your address yourself in the site settings section. Edited By David Ashby - RCME on 25/07/2013 14:42:
kc
What model was this originally intended for? The Dracon as mentioned earlier was a completly different plane as far as I can see and was balsa.I cannot find any mention of FoamFing in any of my RM or RCME magazines from the 1980's or 90's....perhaps I missed that issue! kc
After a lot of research in my magazine archives I finally found the FoamFing article! It was a free plan in the RC Funfly Special edited by David Boddington & Ian Peacock, published by Argus ( RCME owners at the time) and whilst it is undated it seems to be 1987 from a Woodvale advert. The plan shows how the foam board is cut to provide wing, elevons, fin & wingtips all from the one board.Foam Fing was a tailless delta with triangular fin & wing endplates. .10 to .15 engines 2 to 3 function radio. There is no mention of the wing being available from Plans Service though. David, would you like me to scan the article & plan to show on the FoamFing thread?

Roy Mundy
Oh Yes please I love working with depron ..........................I will have a go at a flying wing design. Thank you
kc
The original article shows how the designer intended to use the material - shows how it is cut to provide the wing and also the fin etc. It would be appropriate if some people used it to make a model to the original design, wouldn't it? kc
The plan is across two pages in the magazine........
kc
.......this is the righthand page I think you will see the join (where another plan is inserted) and can match the two halves, ensuring the horizontal lines are continuous.
kc
The article has some extra info
kc
The final page of the article .......
WolstonFlyer
Nice one kc, this is very similar to what I had in mind ( but as a pusher) but with an electric setup. The plan has the all important C of G so that helps a lot.
kc
I suppose this must rank as one of the ugliest models ever! but I bet it flys well if David Boddington designed it! It seems likely that Ken Swailes may have built the prototype as he did for many of the Boddington designs in other magazines ( AMI & Model Flyer ) as he is shown hand launching the model in one of the photos. One final thought before everyone rushes to build models from the foam board..........these boards are over 25 years old ...........does this material become brittle with age and is it as strong as it was in 1987?
WolstonFlyer
Good point about the age of the board, as far as I know the stuff is based on extruded polystyrene with craft type paper bonded to both sides... if it has been kept dry and in the dark I think it should be OK..... probably....... Robin Kearney
Aha, thanks for the scans KC. Now I see the photo of it in the article I remember it from when it was originally published. Intersting reading, thanks for sharing. r.
digitalflyer
I know this isn't meant to be a mass build, but if one of those boards lands on my door step, I think I'm gonna give the original "Foam Fing" a go thanks to KC, in respect of Dave Boddington (only change it to B/L as I have given away all my engines)... Who's with me?
