Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator
It would help us to help you if we had an idea of your flying experience and standard. You say you "have flown" high wing trainers - are you saying you can fly one well? How well is "well"? I'd say; take off, climb out straight. fly a level circuit in either direction - either "racetrack" or rectangular. Perform some basic aerobatics at least reasonably if not perfectly - eg a roll and a loop. And finally, land pretty reliably, on the strip, without ripping the undercarriage out - at least most of the time? Because if you can't do that yet - then you need a high wing trainer! If you can do that with a high wing trainer then it makes sense to look at some alternatives and we could suggest some! BEB
Tony Jones 5
Same question - good low wing trainer? Can fly the basics as described. Looking at Seagull 40.
David Davis
The Kyosho Calmato is a nice model but only if you can fly a high-wing trainer as BEB suggests. Then there's the Ben Buckle Galahad but you have to build that and it's a bit of an unconventional suggestion.
Rick Tee
Seagull Pilatus PC9, with its tricycle undercarriage its like a trainer to take off and land. On low rates its as docile as a trainer and on high rates fully aerobatic.
cymaz
Why not a wot4? OK its a high wing but its a real hooligan when you turn everything up to 11.
dave barrett
Yes a low wing trainer. Have not flown in years but was upto bronze. But getting back into the hobby now so looking for something a bit different.

OK its a high wing but its a real hooligan when you turn everything up to 11. the wot 4 is always suggested on this forum. But it sounds like he does not like high wing models. the hanger 9 pulse series are excellent models. Kyosho Calmato already suggested lots more suggestions here. Also do a forum search for follow on model

Chris Bott - Moderator
No experience of it myself, but the Soar40 does seem to have a fan club. It certainly won't break the bank either. Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator
The Pulse is good - but it might break the bank! Good quality model though - flies exceptional well, tough U/C to. Not saying the Soar isn't a good model - I don't know, never seen one in the flesh. Mr Hargreaves is a fan I believe! dave barrett
Soar40 does look like a good deal. Your right to say it wont break the bank lol cheap. I think I might need to get the soar 40 for the price seems like a good punt
Rich too
Your first bi-plane perhaps? The Tiger Moth was my introduction to bi-planes ('80's Veron) and it was surprisingly easy to fly on rudder/elevator/throttle only.. Rich ps agree with others, the Soar looks a cracking deal... cymaz
For the extra £7 I'd pick the spacewalker any day - its not my money though Edited By cymaz on 11/12/2013 11:39:45 Edited By cymaz on 11/12/2013 11:40:
kc
The point is a high wing trainer has a certain stability due to the pendulum effect of most of the weight well below the wing. A low winger does not have this (slight )stabilising force. Secondly the high wing is a little further from the ground if ( when ) a poor landing puts one wing too near the ground - it may suffer less damage. So in case any beginners are confused a low wing trainer is for training to fly a low wing model once you are proficient with high wing. Caveman
Cymaz, the link you give for the Spacealker is £100.99, whereas the Soar 40 is $67 from HK UK (around £44). So I could have 2 Soar 40s for the price of 1 Spacewalker!! I'm not suggesting that the Spacewalker isn't a good plane, but I'm more than happy with my Soar 40 GDB
dave barrett
I agree cymaz, the space walker is a nice plane. Still nit 100% Sure on what one to go for will have a look over the options and keep yous posted. Rich2 not really had a thought on bi-planes but will have a look and c if any tickle my fancy.. Djay
I have found that a good general F3 pattern ship is easier to fly than a high wing trainer. With a course pitch prop you can fly a lot slower with loads of stability and very smooth flying. Open the throttle and you can do all the hooligan maneuvers you want. Kyosho , World Models, Hangar 9 all make good F3 style models. Darryl
