Lindsay Todd
Well that's a distinctive fin, not seen one modelled for years, excellent choice sir. Linds

Tony Bennett
maybe??? going to have to re draw the fin as i think the scale has come out wrong, never mind i can use the drawing for working out the hidden rudder controls. Tony Bennett
yup out on scale. its too big. still debating size. 10th scale gives a wingspan of 12ft. i have managed to blow up the old 61 inch control line plans to 90" wingspan. so i can scale up from them. but not sure if i want to build a model of 12ft span this time, worried about weight
Terry Walters
Oooooh! This will be a very exciting project! A Shack, Growler, Contra-rotating Nissen Hut or Bear Hunter call it what you will but it's going a big one isn't it??!! Terry
Colin Leighfield
If it's less than 12 ft. I won't be able to get inside it to fly it home. Spoilsport.
Tony Bennett
had a re think on this. decided on 1/12th scale. that gives me a wingspan of 10' and nacelles big enough to take a 4s battery. plus it will help keep the weight down to a more manageable level. i hope. Colin Leighfield
I'm sure you're right. Even 10ft. is beyond my shed and my wife would go spare if I suggested doing it in the kitchen.
Keith Simmons
The shape of the fin & full side wingspan of 120' . Yep, ticks the boxes for a shack. Are you going to have one props powered and the other free wheeled contra-rotating ? Or both props powered ? There are twin motor setups available per nacelle and there are 4 nacelles ! Ernie
Maybe another KK scorpion would be a more sensible way forward. Large scale multi warbirds can be a wee bit tricky ernie

Tony Bennett
well my last big multi engined model worked out ok. **LINK**
Keith Simmons
What do u mean "tricky" Ernie? To build or to fly? I am sure Tony is more than capable to do whatever he want's to do. We all do like a challenge and experiment doing things.
Ernie
Sorry Tony, Humble pie etc. I was reading your Profile, and assumed by your description of your modelling career that you were relatively inexperienced. It must be way out of date. But maybe you agree with me that there are too many would be modellers out there, who are very limited in both building and flying exoperience, who want to start off with a project that is far too ambitious....I know, I build a control line Dornier twin when I was 16 ( a long time ago) I can still see it on flight one when the inner ED racer cut ernie
Tony Bennett
no problem, the profile needs updating. i must have built 30 models in the last 4 years now. while my flying is still intermediate i am working on improving to the state where a large multi engined project will be ok for me to fly. building is my main reason for existing, i love building far more than flying. kc
Can you build a 12 ft Shackleton and keep it under 7 kilos? Over 7 kilos means extra BMFA rules apply including B certificate recommended etc.If the plane exceeds 20 kilos it needs an exemption certificate which means using the inspection service ( during construction I think) A whole different ballgame. Monz
Today, two Shacks ran almost at the same time. One in Coventry, WR963 and the other in Cape Town, P1722. Then a modelling client dropped off a 1958 copy of Aeromodeller with the Shack three view in it. It's a sign Tony! Your Shack is going to be awesome! I don't think there has been a model of one since that control line model? Are you going to do it in SAAF or RAF colours?
Keith Simmons
Great choice for a MR mk3 shack, Add the front air gunners windscreen and canopy. I think you can slip in the lipo batteries in the wings at 1/12 scale as it's deep enough. That's if you need more capacity from within the space of what's left over in the nacelles after the motors and ESC's.
Tony Bennett
well i have been playing with the sketch i did yesterday and have come up with this. trying to work out construction methods now. i am thinking of building the fuselage in two halves flat on the building board using ply keels and then joining the two halves later. then 6x6 stringers and finally sheeting with 2mm soft balsa. the whole nose section will be removable for transport and storage, so i have to design the fixings into it as well. getting to the point where i need to almost cut some wood and have a trial build. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Toni Reynaud
I think the skill you demonstrate in "sketching" your projected builds is only matched by the superb standard of the finished article. I'll be watching this one. (I considered one very briefly after the demise of the Hercules, but it's too complex a shape to do a simple foam build.)
