Martin Fane
Started to have a go at putting the instrument panels together - I'm using Dylans laser cut panels. I could not get myself a decent picture of the instruments printed off so decided on these individual instruments. Still a long way to go but looks promising so far. The lighting conditions have shown up a blue edge on the instruments - its not there in real life !!
Terry Walters
That Martin is very nice and looks right doesn't it.? Did you purchase those instruments? Terry
Martin Fane
Hi Terry Yep, I used this company: http://www.aerocockpit.com/ Great range and easy to deal with. The instruments I went for are a little oversize - had to open up the panel cutouts. But I think the effect is good if not quite to scale. Fatscoleymo
All looks fantastic Martin - you're pushing the benchmark upwards! Fats
Terry Walters
Martin - thanks - I've been on that site before and lost the link and couldn't remember their name. Look good don't they? I just might treat myself as a mojo stimulant! Terry
Martin Fane
Made a little progress on the instrument panels today, decided not to face the panels with foil or lithoplate so a few coats of sanding sealer later the panels are primed ready for a coat of aluminium paint. In the meantime tried a bit of the "riveting" technique to represent the instrument mounting screws. The plan is to paint the panel aluminium then in flat black and then scuff it up a bit. Will try to add a few of the switches too
Colin Leighfield
Great Martin. Going back to the earlier conversation about the gap between the panel and fuselage, I think the panel is probably attached with flexible mountings to the airframe to avoid the transmission of vibration, so you need a gap. Martin Fane
Hi colin With my (lack of) skills a gap in fitting the panel will be no problem
Colin Leighfield
A man after my own heart! On the full size, everything shakes when you start the engine, so if I leave everything loose enough I can probably get to mine to do that. It will be interesting to se how many bits drop off. Martin Fane
Suffering a little instrumentitis at the moment, almost completed the panels with a few added switches, still waiting for ROC and ASI so the panels look a little lacking. Could'nt resist a little trial fit, not sure my weathering may be a little over the top
Fatscoleymo
Looks great Martin, weathering is fine. Those bezels really do the job. Fats

Martin Fane
Slow progress on the wing finish, having applied a second coat of resin (I now know thats not needed when using peel ply ) I sanded it to what seemed a flat finish only for an initial primer coat to reveal a not very flat surface at all So a bit more sanding and a bit of stopper and more sanding to get to this stage Then another go with the primer and I'm quite pleased with the surface finish Also been spending a bit of time on stitching and tapeing - this models using more of the tape than I expected so a call to Mick Reeves models will be needed tomorrow
Fatscoleymo
Looking good Martin. I hope my wing turns out that well. I used best part of 2 packs of Mick's tapes, suprising how much there is to do. Fats
Colin Leighfield
Looks great Martin, I don't think I'll be approaching that standard of detail!
john stones 1 - Moderator
Bit of paint brings the wing to life Martin, you're a tidy modeller John Edited By john stones 1 on 18/03/2015 21:59:

Martin Fane
Thanks for the comments guys - I'm only following the masters lead so thanks to Danny for all his guidance on this build.
Danny Fenton
The wing looks fabulous Martin, remember there are panel lines to go on too so some of the blemishes will get hidden when doing those. Besides there doesn't appear to be a smooth Chipmunk anywhere, 50 + years of students is bound to distort a few sections I am counting on it to hide my undulating wing Cheers Danny
Martin Fane
Hi Danny Yeah, I have ordered some of MRs panel line tape along with more ribtape, I also have some similar tape from Fighter Aces, not sure if it isn't too thick though for 1/6th scale. I'm looking forward to seeing how you go about the panel lines using the tape edge method.
Danny Fenton
Another little tip Martin try using either a foam sanding pad (well worn is best) or some steel wool on the primer to soften the edges of the fabric tapes, don't worry they will still stand out but wont be in your face Cheers Danny
