Geoff Gardiner
I am wondering what best to do about control horns. I usually use ones that screw into a back plate but for a scale model I feel this would look wrong. I have been looking for glue in versions available in the UK but have only really found ones suitable for small foamies. looking at Martin and Martian pictures, I am guessing you used glue in ones. Where did you get them and what did you use for the pull-pull horn on the rudder? Geoff...
Mike Beard 1
I used same ones on the tail feathers as the Aileron and flaps. I found ones with the same light grey as the color scheme. For the Ail and flaps, since there was significant hard wood in the structure, they were screwed in from the bottom so nothing visible from wing top.. For the tail feathers I went with screw through for strength.. https://www.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXET44&P=7 You can make them out on picture earlier in thread... Martin McIntosh
I do not use commercial horns, I make them from 1/16" GRP. This way they can be tailored to individual requirements such as flaps or pull-pull. They are drilled 1.6mm then tapped M2 for the ball links which then get a locknut with ca. Martian
Same here Geoff except i use pc board cut with a jewellers saw then fine work if needed with a dremel
Allan Bennett
I've used the commercial nylon ones with a back-plate, but in the case of the 72" Mossie I've simply left off the back-plates because I'm sure there's enough screw length into the wood to hold things together, and the stock screws don't reach the other side anyway. I poke a drop of medium (i.e. reasonably slow setting) cyano into the screw holes before finally inserting the screws. With a bit of Halfords plastic primer, which I use for the whole model, they're then easy to paint the same colour as the model.
Geoff Gardiner
Thanks for the info chaps. I think I might like to have a go at making some GRP horns as it is something I have not done before. I have just ordered some epoxy glass sheet, from HobbyKing, to have a play around with. Geoff Gardiner
I have had a go at designing and 3d printing something to represent what I believe are the carburetor air intakes under the nacelles. More later...
Geoff Gardiner
Just a few pics of how it's going so far: More later...
Martin McIntosh
Looking great. Have you run the motors yet with those spinners fitted? Just received another pair of the pointed alloy ones because the crash mangled my back plates although the spinner noses were OK and I am not happy with the old, hammered back to shape ones. Geoff Gardiner
Thanks Martin. No, the spinners and props are just taped on for the piccies and I have not tested the motors with the props/spinners on yet. Which alloy ones are you using (I might need the extra weight upfront!) Martin McIntosh
The HK 3 blade 3.5" ones which would probably not fit your model but the weight definitely came in handy.
Mike Beard 1
Tru-Turn 3.75" Perfect fit but not cheap! http://www.truturn.com/cgi-bin/store/agora.cgi?p_id=tt3753b120:20&ppinc=spinners200&exact_match=on
Geoff Gardiner
Thanks Mike. As you say - a bit pricey! Are they the ones that you have used?
Geoff Gardiner
Have just realised that I have made a slight blunder........ I forgot to add any horn support blocks on the rudder. Having made up a horn from some epoxy glass sheet. It was out with the knife. Should be OK once painted - you live and learn! More later... Geoff Gardiner
I tinkered with the hinging of the gear doors today. I bit of trial and error to get them in the correct place. They needed to be close to the outside edge and angled in, to ensure a good fit to the doors when closed. Ready for painting now...
Geoff Gardiner
I took advantage of a half decent bit of weather today and squirted some grey primer around. First light coat going on in my makeshift spray booth. Then off to the drying area. Then after another coat. Final filling and sanding next. More later... Mike Beard 1
Looks great! Interesting that you sprayed with the control surfaces attached. Much easier! I did them separately. Looking forward to seeing the final paint! I will be doing my maiden in a couple of weeks, will send pics..
Martin McIntosh
Looking forward to your maiden results Mike. Not had the patch conditions/courage to re test mine after the major repairs and changes.
Geoff Gardiner
Good luck with the maiden Mike, hope all goes well. I always find it a bit of a 'squirty bottom' moment! I have rubbed down the primer with we & dry, filled any imperfections and rubbed that down. It is now ready for the final colours to go on. Pictures above are before the final rub down of the filler. Martin McIntosh
Take the lens cap off next time! No, sorry, the black pics have suddenly appeared as normal. Edited By Martin McIntosh on 21/04/2018 16:55:

Mike Beard 1
Back to the spinners FYI. Mine are 3 3/4 counter rotating Tru-Turn. They are really nice and spin totally true. All set now for maiden next weekend weather (want it to be perfect!) pending..
Mike Beard 1
Geoff: What are you using?
Geoff Gardiner
Mike, I am hoping to use the vac-formed ones supplied by Tony. Will have to see how things pan out. I did a bit more spraying yesterday. I thought I would try Valspar paint mixed at B&Q. I am thinning it with blue car screen wash. The wash I have is concentrated so I have diluted to 25% with water. Then I mixed 100ml paint with 30ml diluted wash. It seemed to spray on and cover quit well. More later...
