Visiting the UK in September

Hi all,

I have managed to book a rare (for me) trip to the UK in September this year. I'd appreciate some advice regarding aviation related events, exhibitions and museums that are worthwhile visiting while I am there. I am interested in full size aircraft and rc models. I'll be based in the South East but I'll also be visiting the Peak District.

I have always wanted to view the Shuttleworth collection. Is it possible to make arrangements to take detailed photographs of the AVRO 621 Tutor?

RAF museum in North London is well worth a visit, easy access from the M25.

While visiting the Peak District the Manchester museum of Science and Technology is worth a visit. Lots of Avro stuff there (local company) And if you take the wife, Coronation Street is just round the corner.

I think the Old Corrie set was demolished earlier this year - it was open for a couple of years after the film set was rebuilt in Media City - I dont think you can do a visit the new set

Old Warden, Duxford and RAF museum at Hendon are the most worthwhile & all need a full day as they have far more exhibits than the others mentioned. Cosford between Wolverhamton & Telford is also almost as good & not that far from Peak District. In the same area the Black Country museum does not have aircraft but is full of historic workers houses and industrial displays - unusual and not well known.

Note that full size flying displays are usually sold out in advance at Old Warden & Duxford so go on some other day! However Old Warden MODEL flying days on 23& 24 Sept are never sold out in my experience. Go then.

Old Warden has the Swiss Gardens adjacent for any non aeromodellers. Duxford has a Tank museum also a 'prefab' ( post WW2 economy house) the operations room and on weekdays you can often see aircraft restoration work being done.

I have decided that the Headcorn show is not worth the 40 mile journey! so don't bother too much if you have little time. Museum is very small too.

Not in the area and not aircraft but I must mention the Internal Fire Museum of Power full of diesel engines - many working- near Cardigan in Wales open Wed to Sunday. Huge marine diesels running , and every other type too. Run by enthusiasts and needs a couple of hours to all afternoon.

Barry, you can get fairly close to most Shuttleworth aircraft most of the time. If you want to be sure that a particular aircraft will be on display, then best to email them beforehand - they're usually very helpful. If you want even closer access to any aircraft, behind the barriers, then this has to be arranged in advance for when an escort will be available. There's also an extra charge made for this, around £25 if I recall correctly. As has already been said, the DH Museum at London Colney is worth visiting if you're in the area.

Whilst in the south a visit to the Museum of Army Aviation at Middle Wallop is worthwhile. Its on the site of the largest grass airfield in the country. When you have finished in the museum go to the restaurant, have a cup of tea and watch the current helicopters on the airfield. BTW a number of model events are held there during the year Sam35 and scale aero-tow hold events at MW.

If you visit a model club & can arrange to fly (I'm in the North West so can't help with any arrangement) then you can be covered by the BMFA Insurance with no expense. Here's the extract from the BMFA Handbook Page 11:

(h) Club indemnity is extended to enable clubs to welcome Model Flyers from Overseas Countries to fly at their club sites during short visits to the UK. In the interest of promoting good international relations the BMFA will absorb the cost of providing this indemnity for a period not exceeding 30 consecutive days for any one overseas visitor in any single membership year. Club Secretaries are required to notify the BMFA, in advance, if this provision is required.

To show how close you can get to the Shuttleworth Tutor I took the following photo's today. Seems you could get a lot of detail even without going inside the barriers, but I reckon permission would be fairly easy. Maybe you would need something like a 'selfie stick' to get photos of the cockpit interior. ( only use for those stupid gadgets! )    Plenty of light in the hangers on a cloudy but bright day.   Of course they move the planes around sometimes and some today had the engines out or cowling off whilst on display,  so tit could be different  in September.
